THE many advantages of being educated at St John’s Parochial School will be there for all to see on Saturday, January 26 at 1pm when the school hosts an Open Day.

Parents of children starting school in September, or indeed the year after, will be very impressed with the family atmosphere in the school, located in the heart of the town, which has been educating children since 1958.

“It’s to give people an opportunity for people to come in, see our school and to get a feel for the positive atmosphere here,” explained Acting Principal, Patricia Fitzell. “Parents will have a chance to talk to the teachers while the children engage in activities organised on the day.”

There are just over 40 pupils in the two-teacher school with pupils from junior infants to second class in one classroom and third to sixth classes in the other. There is also a full-time support teacher working with children from both classes.

“There’s very much a familial atmosphere in the school and the children work in a positive and nurturing environment.”

Physical exercise is also important at the school and they avail of the facilities in Teach an tSolais adjacent to the building. They also take a Mindfulness class. Pupils also formed a Student Council and a Green Schools Committee.

This Council organises various fundraising activities throughout the year, the most recent being a ‘Pyjamas and Movie Day’.

Located just off Ashe Street, it’s an ideal spot for the school to use the many amenities within walking distance such as the library, Town Park, Siamsa Tíre and Kerry County Museum.

While the perception may be there that it is a Church of Ireland school, Ms Fitzell was keen to express that they welcome children of all faiths and none.

“Our own preparation for Confirmation is done outside the school and preparation for Holy Communion and Confirmation is also facilitated outside the school.”

So if you have a child going to school this September, why not call down at 1pm on Saturday, January 26 and see for yourself the great facilities they have at St John’s Parochial School on Ashe Street. You can also check out the school website on http://stjohnsschooltralee.weebly.com/
