Dingle Way Challenge 2016

It’s that time of the year again! Yes, The Dingle Way Challenge is back and will take place on Sunday the 5th of June. Come and experience the stunning scenery of West Kerry and the Atlantic Ocean as you walk along the most westerly peninsula in Europe, overlooking the Blasket Islands and Skellig Rock and also savour the magic of Inch Beach.

This walk is ideal for groups, teams, friends and solo hikers and you can either opt for The Dingle Way Challenge, a 45km walk which will involve a mixture of beach walks, grass paths and road walking or The Ultra Dingle Way Challenge, a 57km walk which starts at the foothills of the famous Conor Pass, taking you through a tough 12km mountain route across the peninsula before joining up with the DWC route. Juvenile Academy

The games scheduled for our U6, U8, U10 against our neighbours Annascaul / Camp last Sunday as well as training for the girls didn’t take place due to the torrential rain that fell almost all day. The Academy however resumes this Sunday on our field at the usual time of 10:30 am. New players are welcome.

We wish them the best of luck in their next game at home to Ardfert in the Central Region League, next Monday the 18th of April. Throw-in is at 7pm. Please come and show your support.

Minors

County Minor League R4
Castlegregory 2-14    St Pats 1-11

St Pats minors travelled to Castlegregory last Tuesday night in their final game of the county league. Due to a rugby game, the team was down to a bare 13 including debutant Damien Quirke who answered his club’s call and played extremely well in goals. St Pats started the game in barnstorming fashion and dominated the early exchanges with Kieran Dwyer and Cillian “Massey” O’Riordan leading by example, launching wave after wave of attacks from midfield.

St Pats raced into a 0-5 to 0-1 lead after 20 minutes, with Eoin Greaney in particular in devastatingly accurate form. Indeed, Eoin was to finish with a staggering 0-7 from the centre forward position. The full back line of Shane O’Donoghue and Joe O’Connor had the beating of their men throughout the game and can both be very satisfied with their performances. The half back line of Brian Murphy, Tommy Lynch and Mikey Cahill were playing a world of good football and were fantastically tigerish in the tackle, hard but fair.

Football is a fickle sport and despite heroics all over the pitch, Castle struck late for two quick fire goals just before halftime, which saw us trail, in a travesty of justice, by 3 points at halftime, 2-4 to 0-7. It would have been very easy for the team to have dropped the heads and lesser men would have. But not these bunch of young men are made of tougher stuff and refused to throw in the towel and fought and battled with everything in their fiber.

The half forward line of Shane Jordan, the aforementioned Eoin Greaney, and James Friel, covered every blade of grass on the pitch, while the inside forwards of Jack Lynch and Adam Boyle were constantly out in front of their men and played very intelligently. Kieran Dwyer again showed why we all think he will be a great Kerry minor, playing intelligently throughout and finishing with 1-3. Tommy Lynch’s dynamism has been missing for the senior team recently but he showed outstanding leadership and commitment throughout.

As the game progressed, Castle sensed the game was slipping from them and threw in sub after sub, and their fresh legs proved the difference between the sides, scoring 4 points in the last 5 minutes. The final score does not reflect an epic end to end game of high quality. There is a final league game being played this evening in south Kerry and in the (likely) event of a draw, St Pats minors quest to retain their county league title will come to an end.

Seniors

County League Division 3, Round 3
Keel 0-10 St Pats 1-07

St Pats and Keel shared the spoils in this Division 3, round 3 game played in Keel last Saturday under dry conditions after a wet start to the day. The first score of the game came just after 3 minutes from a free after Kieran Hurley was fouled by Keel’s Donal O’Neill. Kieran stepped up and took the free himself to register the first score. Keel’s first point came in the 6th minute also from a free by no other than, Gary Sayers.

This was followed by another free for Keel, pointed by Aaron Murphy. The highlight of this half came mid-way into the game when a kickout from Keel’s Stephen Cahillane was touched down by Mike O’Sullivan in midfield and the breaking ball from that was picked up by a Pats player who passed it to Adrian Greaney, and ate up the ground in 5 strides to release Sean Dowling for a beautiful point. A couple of frees from Kieran Hurley nudged our noses in front but Keel kept in touch with a couple of points from play and free. St Pat’s Kevin O’Shea kicked the last point of the half for a scoreline of Keel 0-5 St Pats 0-6.

Keel started the second half in blistering form, scoring 4 unanswered points all from frees to lead by 3 points. St Pats first score of the half was a goal by Kieran Hurley who was fed a quick ball after Tommy Lynch was fouled to level matters once again. There was a 10 minute spell where neither team scored but this was broken by Gary Sayers who pointed from a free to hand Keel a solitary point lead.

St Pats threw everything at Keel so as to salvage something from this game that was littered with points from frees and their efforts paid off when a Pats player was fouled with less than a minute to go. The resulting pressure free was scored by Kieran Hurley to level the match. This was a fair result as both teams did not deserve to lose.
Referee Jim O’Connor (Scartaglen) had a good enough game but there were too many frees given

St.Pats Team:

Paudie Bailey, Paudie O’Connor, Andy Byrne, Jake Foley, Liam Poff, Kevin O’Shea (0-1), Adrian Greaney, Paul McMahon, Michael O’Sullivan, Kieran Hurley (C) (1-5, 5f), Brendan Poff, Sean Dowling (0-1), Gary Savage, Willie Hurley, Liam O’Suillivan
Subs used: Tommy Lynch for Gary Savage, Brendáin Savage for Willie Hurley

Our next game is this Sunday, the 17th April away to Duagh in the Junior Club football Championship. Throw-in is at 2.30pm.
