Dingle Way Challenge 2016

Last Sunday saw St. Pats GAA host the fourth Dingle Way Challenge with the aim to raise funds for the development projects the club is undertaking to enhance our facilities for our players, members and the greater community in general, and it was a resounding success! We were blessed with the weather as participants for the Ultra route gathered at the clubhouse as early as 3.30am for registration and briefing on safety from the organising committee. The walk itself was 57km long for the very fit ultra participants and 46km for the DWC proper which was broken down into 4 stages as walkers got to experience the most westerly peninsula in Europe overlooking the Blasket Islands, Skellig Rock and Inch beach. Participants were treated to breakfast at Strand Hotel, Inch and lunch at Camp Schoolhouse. This year’s walk was the most challenging especially at the Loop of Inch Island, but guts and perseverance prevailed as participants were greeted at the finishing line by members of the organising committee with a DWC medal, ice-pop, water and lots of refreshments. The first Ultra participant to arrive at the finishing line was Geraldine O’Sullivan from Bantry Athletic Club at 2.20pm. After all the walking was done, all were invited to Skelper Quane’s Bar for a BBQ and a chance to interact with other walkers and members of the community.
Overall, the event was the most successful to date with over 300 participants ensuring that all the hard work put by the committee and club in general paid off. The club will like to use this opportunity to thank our main sponsor, Yummy Cafe and all the other businesses who contributed to this event by providing services, food, drinks and donating generously. We encourage all our club members to support these businesses in any way they can. Many thanks to Derryquay ICA for helping out with the catering, our club members and members of the general public who supported the event by participating and contributing in to small ways to the smooth running of this event. Well done to Derek, James and the rest of the organising committee for the meticulous planning in ensuring everything ran like clockwork. Finally, a huge thanks goes to all the walkers who participated and ensured that it was a success. It wouldn’t have happened without your participation and we appreciate it.
