Dingle Way Challenge 2017

It’s that time of the year again! Yes, The Dingle Way Challenge will take place on Sunday the 4th of June (keep this date free in your diaries).

This walk is ideal for groups, teams, friends and solo hikers and you can either opt for The Dingle Way Challenge, a 34km walk which will involve a mixture of grass paths and road walking where walkers will get to experience the famous An Ghaeltacht GAA pitch in Murrioch (there will be a food stop here), the football club of the famous former Kerry footballers, Marc, Tomas and Darragh Ó Sé and culminating in Cloghane, via the valley that lies between Mount Brandon and Conor Pass or The Ultra Dingle Way Challenge, a 45km walk which starts at Dingle harbour, as the normal route, taking you through a tough 12km mountain route over Mount Brandon and finishing up at Cloghane, where there will be BBQ on arrival.

Buses going back to the clubhouse will be provided where there will be showers available for those who need it.

There will also be music in Quane’s later that evening. This Challenge gives locals and tourists alike a great opportunity to experience the stunning scenery that West Kerry has to offer in a fun, safe and challenging environment.

This year’s route is slightly shorter than last year but don’t be fooled as the Ultra section more than makes up for it. Registration can be completed on the Dingle Way Challenge’s Facebook page.

Juvenile Academy

U6: Well done to Bruce McMillan, Isaac Price and Oscar Curran who put in a great training session last Sunday morning but a huge well done to Hannah Enright who received our player of the week trophy by showing great skill and determination throughout the session. Keep up the good work.

U8: Another great session was enjoyed by this young group of emerging stars, with a lot of fun and games had during the hour. It is great and encouraging to see all the kids improving weekly, especially our player of the week, Stephen Enright. Stephen is one of the players showing consistent improvement and great commitment at the Academy sessions. Training continues next Sunday at Pres. Hall at 10am

U10: St Pats under 10’s Academy were training again last Sunday. It was great to be outdoors on our Astro pitch for the first time this year.  All our players who attended were eager to learn and show off their skills. They all put in a great effort especially Caoilainn Culloo, Grainne Breen, Darragh Murphy and Michael Enright who made a welcome return from injury. Well done to the player of the week Luke Passway, keep up the good work. It’s important everyone keeps practicing their skills at home during the week. We are back training again Sunday morning at 10.30am at home on the pitch.

U12: Our second challenge game of the season was against Kerins O’Rahillys on a glorious Saturday afternoon.  There were clear signs of rustiness in the first half, as we conceded a huge lead to our opponents, while scoring 5 points ourselves (3 from Fionn, and 1 each from Rory and Seánie).  The half-time break gave us a chance to reorganise, and we were much better in the second period, with James taking over in goal, and Callum Houston lording the full back line. In this he was ably supported by Caoimhe O’Sullivan, Callum Hayes, Thomas Sheehy, and Keelin Enright.  Paddy, Zach and Eddie also played a solid role as we switched things around to give every player a good run out.

Caoimhe Dairo and Daniel worked very hard through the middle.  Lisa, Siobhán, Cillian and Mark helped to work the ball through to the full forward line.  We marched our opponents score for score in the second half, and there is plenty more to come from this squad.  The second half scorers were Fionn (1-2), Seánie (1-1), and Caoimhe Dairo (a point).

Our next match is on Thursday evening against Ballyheigue at 6.30pm. Our County league campaign kicks off on Sunday, the 2nd of April when we play Beale away. Throw in is at 6pm.

U14: We play Cordal/Scartaglin away in the first round of the County League on Wednesday, 29th at 6.30pm. Best of luck to all.

Minors

Our minors played St Michaels-Foilmore last Saturday in a back game. We travelled with only 13 players and injury to goalkeeper, Sean Hogan made victory a though task. This was further compounded with a black card issued to Joe O’Connor and we eventually lost by 2-15 to 1-09.

Seniors

SFL Div 2 Rd. 1 St Pats 1-07 Kilcummin 0-20

Kilcummin took all the points in this keenly contested encounter played in Blennerville last Sunday in which Kilcummin’s Philip Casey scored 7 points, 2 from frees.

The away side scored the first two points of the game after 5 minutes through Noel Duggan before St Pats could have the white flag raised. They did 5 minutes later through Willie Hurley after some excellent play by David O’Callaghan.

Kilcummin raised their game and scored four unreplied points to stretch their lead with Willie pulling one back for St Pats. The away side were on the ascendancy at this stage and playing with a lot of purpose with their players always ahead of their markers for most of the balls. This was reflected in the scores as the home side trailed by seven points after 24 minutes.

Brendan Poff gave hope to St Pats after 26 minutes when his solo play resulted in the green flag being raised. The turning point of the game came a few minutes later when Kieran Hurley was sent off for retaliation against Kevin Gorman.

With a man down and already trailing the game, it was always going to be difficult for St Pats to close the gap despite the brace by David O’Callaghan afterwards. Kilcummin made their extra man pay off when Philip Casey found himself with acres of space to point over, leaving half time scores at St Pats 1-04 Kilcummin 0-10

The second half started the same way as the first with Kilcummin seizing control of the game and after a minute into the half, Richie O’Connor fisted over.

Early into the half, Kilcummin’s goalkeeper, Kieran Fleming was penalised for time wasting and the resultant throw ball led to a Pats free, which was converted by David O’Callaghan. He redeemed himself mid-way into the half by making a point-blank save from Kevin O’Shea, who found himself in with a goal chance.

Breandáin Savage scored a couple of good points but it was not enough as Kilcummin ran out comfortable winners on a scoreline of St Pats 1-07 Kilcummin 0-20

There is a break next week, but we will be playing Ardfert away in the third round of the County League on the 9th of April. Throw-in is at 3pm.

Scór na bPaisti County Finals

Scor competitions within the County came to a conclusion at the Foilmore Community Centre  onSunday last March 26th  for the staging of the 2017  Scor Na bPaisti County  Finals which took place before a huge and appreciative audience with 137 competitors taking to the stage.

Certainly the standard of competition was of a very high level and this is down to the trojan work done by all the many organisers of the competitions through their Scor Officers and tutors throughout the County at Club level with the wealth of talent that was on display at the finals.

The day got off to an early start with the Quiz opening the proceedings at the Intermediate School Killorglin which began at the earlier time of 11am and at the end of a titanic battle, it was St. Senans who were crowned winners. Well done to our representatives of Fionn Dairo, Sean Crowley, Paddy Moran and Callum Houston.

The County Title in the Ballad Group category went to Waterville with St. Pats coming second. Well done Katie Moriarty, Sorcha O’Donoghue, Caoimhe O’Sullivan, Siobhan O’Sullivan and Ciara Fitzgibbon.

Our Novelty act was performed by a wonderful cast of Oisin Gallagher, Emma Healy, Orlaith Murphy, Keelin Enright, Thomas Sheehy, Sinead Murphy and Siobhan and Caoimhe O’Sullivan who placed third in a very tight competition.  Thanks to all the mentors and parents for their time, expertise and cooperation.  You all did the club proud.

Community Games

Blennerville/Ballyard had 3 great girls taking part in the Kerry Community Games gymnastics competition in Currow last Sunday and we didn’t come away empty handed.

We would like to say huge congratulations to Cathy Dwyer who won GOLD  in the U15 category and Rachel Mulgrew for finishing 3rd getting a BRONZE medal in U13.

Lucy Mulgrew also took part in the U11 Competition which had huge numbers taking part this year. She was very unlucky not to get a medal but did Blennerville/Ballyard proud. Cathy will now continue on to represent Kerry at the national finals in Dublin.
