2015 Dingle Way Challenge:

The 2015 Dingle Way Challenge will take place on Sunday May 31st. This is the third year of this event, organised by St Pats GAA Club, which promises to be an exceptional day on the mountains, beaches and paths of West Kerry.

This year’s event is sponsored by Benner’s Hotel Tralee which is offering great overnight packages for our out of town visitors and will host our social evening for all participants on completion of the challenge.

The Challenge is a 40km walk taking participants from the foothills of Mt Brandon around through Ballydavid, Wine Strand, Clogher Strand, Dunquin, Slea Head and finishing in the famous Paidi O’Se’s bar.

The route takes in some of the most incredible scenery our country has to offer with views over the Blasket Islands, the historical village of Dunquin, Slea Head drive and many of the places made famous by the film Ryan’s Daughter.

The Challenge is achievable for most people with a reasonable fitness level and we have included an extra Ultra section which begins earlier in the morning for those who wish to test themselves further.

This Challenge gives locals and tourists alike a real opportunity to explore the Dingle Peninsula in a fun, safe and challenging environment. All funds raised will be used for the development projects the club is undertaking to enhance our facilities for our players, members and the greater community.

Don’t stay in bed on the bank holiday weekend. Get up early, test yourself, meet new people and see what Kerry has to offer! Register athttp://www.active.com/tralee-cokerry/walking/dingle-way-challenge-2015

Juvenile Academy:

U6’s: Our u6’s travelled to Ballymac where they participated in a fun joint training session. All players gave it 100% but in particular this week Katlin Laide, Dan O’Connor and Robert O’Shea impressed their coaches showing great skill and determination. Well done to all players, parents and coaches

U8’s: St Pats future stars had a busy week on the playing fields last week. Last Friday our u-8’s  hosted Ardfert and Churchill for a blitz, then on Sunday we made the short trip  to play Ballymac. It was the u-8’s first games of the season. All our St Pats players played the full games and they all played with the heart, spirit and determination that is expect when they wear the St Pats jersey.

The games were played in a good competitive manner. They ebbed and flowed from end to end throughout. Our backs performed brilliantly Luke Passway,  Justin O’Halloran, Kayla O’Connor and Sinead Murphy with their solid tackling and close marking stopped many  attacks in their tracks and so willing were our other backs Jack Costello, Mark Vansteenkiste and Michael Enright to help their team they all drafted forward at different stages to chip in for some vital scores.

Mark O’Brien and Daniel Sheehy  were on fire around the middle of the field. Their surging runs forward tormented our opponents defences all day long and they both got some fine scores. Our forwards as well as scoring themselves worked their socks off for the team. Time and time again Darragh Murphy, Grainne Breen, Rory Daly, Caoilainn Culloo, Millie O’Brien and Killian O’Mahony took turns covering back to help out their teammates. A special thanks to Danny Greaney for giving us a hand to ref the games. T

he management team of Johnny Enright, John Breen and Sean Daly are delighted with the improvement of the skills each player has shown so far. It’s important that each players continues to turn up to each session and keep practicing their skills at home during the week. We have no session this week but we hope ye all take part in the St Pats community games on our  pitch this Thursday evening the 14th and also attend the St Pats juvenile mass in curraheen church on Sunday 17th at 11am. This is a great family occasion and there is a cake sale and a cupáin tae  after..hope to see ye all there.

U10’s: Our u10s were away in Ballymac on Sunday for a challenge match and they did exceptionally well with Orlaith Murphy, Seanie Murphy, Thomas Sheehy, Caoimhe Dairo, Josh Quilter and Roisin Griffin giving it their all during the games. We’d like to use this opportunity to thank Ballymac GAA club for their hospitality.

U12’s: Cordal 2-3 St Pats 2-7

Another great  display by this gutsy u12 team who played with great heart from goal keeper to all of the subs who came on. In a highly exciting game st pats came out winners in the end in a game that had everything.

A great ball from Oisin Murray set up our opening points of the game one was Cooley put over by sean Crowley and the second one was a great score from samuel Abubaker. This was followed by a great point from tomas O’Sullivan who was unlucky not to follow up with a goal. Great defending by Liam O’Sullivan, Michael Doody and matthew Quilter combined set up Cillian Lynch  who slotted over for a great point .

David Fiaro who made many great saves in goals all night was helped out by his great backs and and this hard work set cillian up for another great point after twisting and turning his man to get passed him. Great combination play by the ever hard working players Danny Greaney and Tomas O’Sullivan  resulted in Tomas lobbing the goalie to score a fantastic goal and was quickly followed by another point from Tomas.

The first half ended with Danny  showing some great defending to avoid a score from cordal to leave the half time score 1-6 to 2 points .Second half started with a great save from David Fiado  and a better clearance from Matthew Quilter who defended great all night . GraceO’Brien ,Adam Mulvihille ,corey O’Shea and diarmuid Griffin  entered the game and all did very well .

Cordal finally broke our great defence of Adam ,Michael ,Liam ,Matthew and  ,Danny and David in goals  to score a goal .This was followed up by a soccer style goal by Oisin Tobin much to the delight of the travelling crowd and this added to the great banter between the sideline and the supporters on both sides .

Great defence with a double save from David and again a super clearance from Matthew and Adam combined  was followed by a clearance from Michael who passed to his brother Liam who then  passed to Cillian who won a free.

He passed the ball to Corey who was very unlucky not to score. Cordal replied with a goal but like all good team Samuel, Danny and Cillian all worked hard to get the ball to Tomas who got the last score of the game.

A huge team performance from all involved tonight and this team showed huge character to hold out against a very strong cordal team. All the defence worked hard and david in goals made many saves our mid field and forwards including all the subs worked hard through out the 50 mins.

U-14’s:

St Pats 2-10, Ballyheigue 2-7

As with most of the un14s games this year it was heart in the mouth stuff for the last few minutes of this game again. St pat s progressed in to the final of the co league with a great win over a strong Ballyheigue side in Blennerville on Wednesday last.

There is no end to the talent on this team,a team which has now grown in  numbers after struggling to field a team last year. St pats got off to a great start with two great points from ever reliable fergal which was followed quickly by a great score from Patrick which was set up by Niall.

Ballyheigue scored a point after some great defence from martin and Damien and from the resulting kick out from James who started in goals tonight. A fielded ball from Fergal reached our ever energetic wing forward of cormac who passed to ali who Cooley pointed from distance.

This was followed up again with another great score after some fantastic defence from cathal  who is mr consistent at the moment clearing his lines with the help of the usual great defending from Bryan, martin,Damien, paddy and ciaran.

The great defending set up a superbly   taking goal from Ian who slotted passed the goalie in to the bottom corner. Last score of this half came from a free from patrick which was got from the gritty Niall who earned a free after he won a hard fought battle with a Ballyheigue player.

The second half started with st pats backs and goalie  being put under extreme pressure and with a combination of some great saves and clearances from gavin and his mighty backs they soaked it up well .

This defence again set up Nathan, who like his father before him  slotted home for a great goal and they were aided by the hard work of ali Tomas and Fergal all around the middle of the field. Again some great defending from ciaran ,cathal ,Damien and martin and a great save from gavin resulted in a point for Fergal who received a great pass from Tomas.

Fergal pointed again after another great ball from patrick who was drifting out the field now as Ballyheigue were getting alot of possession.Gavin again made another great  save and was helped again by cathal in clearing the ball but the backs could not hold out and Ballyheigue hit the ball in to the net.

subs were being introduced during the game Danny, Samuel and Michael were introduced  and this was followed by another goal for the visitors . St pats were under pressure now and the st pats sideline was getting nervous with only three points in it now and at this stage Ballyheigue had all the ball.

Again st pats showed great heart and rose to the challenge with some great defending by the backs and they held out in the end. A great team display again from 1 to 25 and this team is improving with every game .

The final is to be played next week and I strongly urge you to come out and support this spirited team who would do your heart good to watch.

Round 4 Co.League

Brosna v St Pats.

On Sat evening last St Pats travelled to the North Kerry home of the All Ireland Junior Champions, Brosna and came away with two invaluable Co League points.

Adam Barry opened the scoring for Brosna after six minutes & followed up two minutes later by a goal from their No. 6 Eamon Kiely who opened up St Pats defence & was straight through on goal to lead 1.01 to no score.

St Pats had numerous chances at the other end but atrocious shooting saw them register 5 wides in this opening 10 minutes. St Pats continued to dominate but were unable to register a score until the 11th minute when Adrian Greaney was fouled & Kieran Hurley converted. a minute later Willie Hurley put one over from play . Our backs came to grips with their Brosna counterparts.

Luke Mulligan, Paul McMahon & Andy Byrne tightened up considerably & made some good clearances out of defence but our forwards were still having difficulties in converting possession to scores. In the 13th minute Kieran converted another free having been fouled on his way forward.

Two minutes later Newcomer Kieran Dwyer combined with the more experienced Liam Poff & Kevin O’Shea to clear their lines & delivered  the ball up field & the industrious Brendan Poff levelled the scores with a point from

play. 4 points to 1.01. Brosna pulled one back again Eamon Kiely slotting over from play to go one up in the 18th minute. The next three chances went St Pats way but the end result was wide with each attempt. Michael O’Sullivan & Jeffery Foley dominated mid field starving the Brosna forwards of quality ball. In the 25th minute Liam O’Sullivan sent a ball in to Kieran hurley for a point from play. Both sides traded points in the closing minutes, Brosna from a free by Ton McGoldrick & Adrian Greaney from for St Pats to level the scores again at the break. 1.03 to 6 points.

Facing into a stiff breeze & having registered 10 wides in the first half did not bode well for St Pats against the All Ireland Champions but thankfully St Pats steadied the ship & saw off Brosna by 8 pts.

From the throw in Michael fielded well & Jeffery sent the ball in to Liam Sullivan who was fouled , Kieran put us one up with his conversion after 30 secs. Five minutes later Tom McGoldrick levelled with a pt from a free.

Brosna then went 2 up with another pt from a free & one from play from the same player. Kieran hurley reduced the deficit to 1 in the 14th minute & when Tommy Lynch (making his senior debut) was fouled Kieran levelled as we entered the final quarter of the game. Brosna had a “lucky” point a minute later when Steve McAuliffe’s effort hit the upright but managed to go over the bar.

The kick out was collected by Michael O’Sullivan & sent in quickly to Brendan Poff who found Liam Sullivan on the run, Liam shot low & hard to the goalies left into the net, a timely boost St Pats needed.

With spirits high the Hurley brothers added two more points & with our backs standing firm St Pats were 4 points up & playing better.Ten minutes still remained on the clock & Brosna were not prepared to throw in the towel, St Pats dominance held & in the 22nd minute Willie Hurley found Brendan Poff heading goalwards & his rocket of a shot to the net was greeted with euphoria by the St Pats supporters.

Tempers frayed a meléé broke out with Brosna losing their grip on the game and one of their players got his marching orders .

Seanie Hayes & Liam Sullivan combined for our last point to leave the final score Brosna 1.07, St Pats 2.12.

St Pats team: John Fitzgerald, Kieran Dwyer,Paul McMahon, Luke Mulligan,Liam Poff, Kevin O’Shea, Andy Byrne, Jeffery foley, Michael O’Sullivan, Adrian Greaney(1Pt,p)Liam O’Sullivan(1.01,p), Brendan Poff (Capt, 1.01,p),Garry Savage, Kieran hurley( 7 pts,5F),Willie hurley(2pts. 1f,1p). Subs: Tommy Lynch, Seanie Hayes & Eoin Sayers.
