Juvenile Academy

Our Juvenile academy restarted on Sunday last after Summer recess. The U6’s and U8’s entertained our friends from Ballymac & Na Gaeil.

These games were very entertaining and all parents and mentors enjoyed the skill levels, team work and commitment from the future stars of the 3 clubs.

We look forward to return visits to Ballymac & Na Gaeil. The U10’s played a friendly game against a strong Churchill side. Again parents and mentors complimented both sets of players and enjoyed the game.

Thanks to the Juvenile parents and mentors who helped to arrange the games and provided refreshments for our guests from Na Gaeil, Ballymac & Churchill. Our new club jerseys have been ordered. Thanks to sponsors Fitzgibbons and Poff Motors for your much appreciated support.

Seniors

Credit Union County Senior Football League Div 2 Round 8:

Gneeveguilla 3-8 St Pats 0-9

Our senior team travelled to Gneeveguilla last Sunday in the hope of keeping their slim chance of maintaining Division 2 status for 2015 but they were undone in the final quarter by a dogged Gneeveguilla side.

Playing with the aid of a strong wind, St Pats started brightly and had two quick opening points from Willie Hurley.

In the 5th minute, Gneeveguilla had a man sent off which didn’t aid their cause as St Pats were dominating the game in every sector. Luke Mulligan, playing as the spare man was winning a lot of breaking ball around the middle and he also made a foray into the Gneeveguilla half in the 10th minute and finished off a well worked score to extend the lead to 3 points.

Brendan Poff added a further point in the 16th minute after a great ball in by Adrian Greaney. Whilst dominating the possession and being well able to curtail the few attacks By Gneeveguilla, St Pats wasted some chances through poor shot selection and bad wides. Andy Byrne kicked a monster point from 60 yards in the 20th minute to make it a 4 point game.

Gneeveguilla eventually got on the score sheet with a free in the 24th minute but St Pats replied with points from Mulligan and Liam O’Sullivan to give them a 5 point lead at half-time. Gneeveguilla started the second half brightly and kicked two points in the opening five minutes.

St Pats replied with a lovely point from play by Willie Hurley after a great ball in from Anton O’Callaghan. Gneeveguilla added a further to reduce the deficit to 3 points but Paul McMahon responded with a fisted effort in the 40th minute and St Pats looked good value for their 4 point lead. However, disaster struck two minutes later as Gneeveguilla won a penalty after a foul on their corner forward.

They duly dispatched it to leave the minimum between the teams and the momentum pendulum swung in favour of the home side. History repeated itself 5 minutes later as the same corner forward was again judged to have been fouled in the box and Gneeveguilla dispatched the second penalty to put them into the lead for the first time in the game going into the final quarter.

St Pats tried to get back into the game but were caught on the counter attack and Gneeveguilla goaled in the 50th minute which was the final nail in the visitors coffin.

Gneeveguilla added further points in the closing minutes to put gloss on the final score line. However, they were good value for their win considering they played the majority of the game with 14 men.

St Pats deserve huge credit for their performance in the opening 40 minutes but the team is lacking confidence at present and the concession of the two penalties cost them dearly.

This result confirms relegation to Division 3 for next season but hopefully, the team can build on the positives of this performance for the remainder of the league. Team: P Bailey, P O’Connor, A Greaney, Jake Foley, L Mulligan, Jeffrey Foley, P McMahon, L Poff, L O’Sullivan, B Poff, A O’Callaghan, B Savage, W Hurley, A Byrne & G Savage, Subs: S Dowling, C Moore, E Teahan, K Quirke, J Fitzgerald, B Boyle, M O’Sullivan.

Get well soon to Paudie O’Connor who came off after a nasty knee injury in the second half. Next County League fixture is at home to Laune Rangers on the weekend of August 16/17th. The final Junior Town League game is away to Kerins O’Rahilly’s on Tuesday August 5th with a throw in time of 7:30pm in Strand Road.

Under 11’s

Our u11’s had another busy week. On Tuesday we played at home against Mitchels but we were beaten by a very strong team. We saw our first and only point in the first half by Liam O’Sullivan. In the second half Michael Doody and Martin Laucher both scored very skillful goals and we saw 2 lovely points from Danny Greaney and Martin Laucher.

David Faido in goals made some very impressive saves while Cillian Lynch, Matthew Quilter, Jade Harkins and Liam O’Sullivan played outstanding in defence.

On Thursday we played at home against Austin Stacks. Our boys were beaten but they gave a much improved performance. Again we missed some scoring opportunities seeing points from Cillian Lynch, Danny Greaney and Martin Laucher. Mikey Healy scored a lovely soccer style goal, Martin Laucher planted the ball into the net and Danny Greaney lobbed the goalie.

Under 16’s

Our Under 16’s produced another Lazarus like comeback last Wednesday night where they drew with Fossa after being down 9 points. An injury time goal by Eoin Greaney was the icing on a fantastic second half performance. It was also great to see the return of Tommy Lynch after injury. Final score was 4-12 to 3-15. The next outing is at home to Asdee/Ballylongford. This is due to be played Tuesday night July 29th at 7:30pm in Blennerville. Best of luck to the team and management. Result in next week’s notes.
