St Pats 1-10 Laune Rangers 3-12

Two goals in the 10th and 14th minute by Laune Rangers effectively decided the outcome of this county league game played in Blennerville earlier today.

St Pats struck first with two well taken points by their best player on the day, Brendan Poff. Laune Rangers added a point before they struck for this first goal; finished by full forward Colm O’Shea after great work by MF Russell in the build up.

Brendan Poff replied with his and St Pats third point in the 13th. However, from the resultant kickout, Laune Rangers’ corner forward John O’Shea did well to round his marker and finish to the net to give the visitors a sizeable lead, a lead they would not relinquish.

Both team swapped points to make the scoreline 2-5 to 0-5 with five minutes left in the first half. However, some sloppy passing by the home side was punished by three quick points from Laune Rangers going up to the final whistle.

St Pats added a point on the stroke of half time to leave the score 2-8 to 0-6 in favour of the County Championship Quarter Finalists.

St Pats started the second half brightly and added 2 points to quickly reduce the deficit to two goals. However, Laune Rangers always seemed to have the ability to go up a gear and keep some distance between the teams. They added points in the 35th and 38th minute to keep an eight point gap.

However, in the 39th minute, St Pats scored a well deserved goal after a great run through the defence by wing back Luke Mulligan and he finished well. It was now a five point game and Laune Rangers could not shake off the home side.

However, Laune Rangers struck for their third goal in the 42nd minute in controversial circumstances as it appeared Luke Mulligan from St Pats was fouled prior to the goal being scored.

Regardless, John Sheehan gained possession and he fed the ever dangerous Shane McSweeney who finished well to make the score line 3-9 to 1-8.

Sheehan added a monster point immediately after to extend the lead to 8 points. St Pats responded well and they reduced the gap back to two goals with points from frees by Kieran Hurley.

St Pats had a glorious chance to reduce the gap to three points in the 58th minute with a goal chance but substitute Sean Hayes’ shot just hit the side netting. From the resultant kickout, Laune Rangers caught the Blennerville defence off guard and Colm O’Shea was adjudged to have been fouled in the square.

MF Russell blasted the penalty over the bar. Laune Rangers added a further point in the 59th minute by Man Of The Match Shane McSweeney, to run out 8 point winners. Final Score: St Pats 1-10 Laune Rangers 3-12.

Killian Quirke and Eric Teahan both made their competitive debuts with the senior team and they both acquitted themselves very well. Kieran Dwyer also togged out for the senior team for the first time so well done to all three.

St Pats: P Bailey, K Quirke, P McMahon, E Teahan, L Mulligan (1-0), J Foley, S Dowling, L Poff, M O’Sullivan, D Kerins, K Hurley (0-4 frees), B Poff (0-4) , G Savage (0-1), A Byrne (0-1) & W Hurley. Subs: B Savage, A O’Callaghan, S Hayes, B Boyle, J Fitzgerald & K Dwyer.
