SENIOR FOOTBALL:

Dingle 0-12

Austin Stacks 0-6.

We could be accused of looking for excuses if we mention the weather in Dingle for last Saturday evening’s (21st Sept) first round of the Co. Championship. But it was a factor. We played into a very strong wind and continuous rain in the first half and trailed by six points to two at half time – our first score coming from a Seán Quilter free in the 26th minute followed a minute later by one from play by Fiachna Mangan.

But just as the second half started the sun came out, the rain ceased and the wind died down. Dingle added two more points just after the restart and then we added two more in the 36th and 38th minutes, one from a Darragh O’Brien free and the second from play by corner-back, Dylan Casey.

We didn’t score again until the 59th minute. During that period Dingle had added three more points from play to leave them with a seven points lead at that stage. In the closing minutes Seán Quilter (who, along with Michael O’Gara and Shane Walsh, was making his Championship debut) added two more points for us (the last one from an acute angled free) while Dingle scored one more to leave them with six points to spare at the end.

As well as our debutants it was also good to see Ronan Shanahan back in action again and to see Michael O’Donnell making his first appearance of the season, donning a black and amber jersey for the first time in 51 weeks.

Team: Robbie Murphy, Colin Griffin, Barry Shanahan, Dylan Casey (0-1), Jack O’Shea, Conor Jordan (Capt), Ronan Shanahan, Wayne Guthrie, Joseph O’Connor, Fiachna Mangan (0-1), Michael O’Donnell, Shane O’Callaghan, Seán Quilter (0-3 – two frees), Kieran Donaghy, Darragh O’Brien (0-1 free).

Subs used: Jack Morgan (34m), Michael O’Gara (38m), Ciarán O’Reilly (42m), Shane Carroll (49m), Pa McCarthy (50m), Shane Walsh (64m).

We have drawn East Kerry in R2B of the Championship and that game goes ahead as a double header in Fitzgerald Stadium on next Sunday (29th Sept) at 3.30pm. The first game, between Rathmore and Kenmare Shamrocks, throws in a 1.30pm.

THE C TEAM: Our Barrett Cup final against Annascaul did not go ahead as scheduled last Friday. It has now been refixed for next Friday week (4th Oct) in Caherslee at 7.30pm. This will be our 11th appearance in the Barrett Cup final. In our ten previous appearances we have won 7 (our last win in 2011) and lost three.

SCÓR: Scór is a GAA competition that combines all the colour and rivalry of Gaelic Games with the social/fun element of Ireland’s traditional past-times. The competition was established by the GAA in 1969 with the aim of promoting Ireland’s traditional pastimes and culture while offering club members the chance to meet up, have fun and represent their club during the winter months while Football and Hurling had ceased.

There are eight events/disciplines in Scór that cover all aspects of Irish culture: Figure/Céilí Dancing, Solo Singing, Ballad Group, Recitation/Scéalaíocht, Léiriú Stáitse/Stage Presentation, Instrumental Music, Set Dancing and Table Quiz. The competition is divided into two age levels, Scór na nÓg, for young people under 17 and Scór Sinsir, for those over 17

Just like the All-Ireland Football and Hurling Championships, clubs taking part in Scór first run off competitions among the club’s own members with the winners going forward to Divisional/District Board stage where deemed necessary, and then on to the County Final. The winners go on to the Provincial final and finally on to the All-Ireland Final.

Austin Stacks invite any members who would be interested in getting involved in organising Austin Stacks Scór teams/groups in any discipline/age group to contact Club Secretary, Elma Nix on 086 1053300.

CLUBHOUSE: As always the Clubhouse is available for all types of Parties and Functions. Enquiries about Club Bookings should be made by contacting Harry Hynes at 087 2467286.

CARDS: The 45 Card Sessions continue in the Clubhouse on every Monday and Thursday nights, commencing at 9.30pm each night.
