SENIOR FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 1-13; St. Marys 2-10.

There was a dramatic finish to this Co. League round 5 game played in blustery conditions in Connolly Park on last Saturday evening (10th June). We were three points up with four minutes of added time on the clock when a way-ward side-line kick was intercepted by St. Marys who raced upfield and scrambled an equalizing goal.

We had played well within ourselves during the whole game having started very well with a pointed forty five by Darragh O’Brien inside the first minute. Apart from a Pa McCarthy penalty goal in the 17th minute all our remaining seven points of the first half came from the boot of David Mannix, from all angles and all distances (four frees). This left us ahead by 1-8 to 1-5 at the break.

Marys opened the scoring in the second half but we then went on to score four on the trot to leave us ahead by six (1-12 to 1-6) at the end of the third quarter. However we only scored one more point in the final quarter – by Shane Carroll, while the Cahersiveen boys added four, reducing our lead to three, and try as we did we failed to add that insurance point which turned out to be costly in the end.

Team: David Hennessy, Fearghal MacNamara, Barry Walsh, Denis Costello, Pa McCarthy (1-0 penalty), Jack O’Shea,  Jack Morgan, Shane Carroll (0-1), Alan Duggan (0-1), Seán Ryan, Fiachna Mangan (0-1), Michael O’Donnell, David Mannix (0-8 – four frees), Shane O’Callaghan (Capt), Darragh O’Brien (0-2 – one 45).

Subs used: John Murphy (37m), Seán Dukes (39m), Darragh Scanlon (55m).

Games are now coming thick and fast in the Co. League. We travel to Templenoe on next Saturday evening  (17th June) for a 7.30pm start against the local side. Then the week after (Saturday, 24th June) we have a home game against Dr. Crokes and then on the following Saturday (1st July) (the evening before the Munster SF & MF Finals) we have a home game against Dingle.

B FOOTBALL: Austin Stacks 2-8; Churchill 1-12.

After a tight game all through Churchill came away from Connolly Park on last Saturday evening (10th June) with a one point win in this fifth round of the Co. League. The sides were level on three points a piece at the end of the first quarter. A 17thminute goal by Theo Diggin gave us the lead for the first time in the game.  But the visitors battled back bit by bit and were back on level terms at half time (1-5 to 0-8).

It was tit for tat also in the second half with a goal each for both sides – ours netted byWilliam Kirby. With 12 minutes remaining the visitors were ahead by one point and despite some heroic efforts by both sides those last twelve minutes yielded no more scores.

Team: Barry Galvin, Brandon Patterson, Paul Galvin, Craig Corcoran, Cathal O’Reilly, Dylan Harnett, Andrew Morrissey, William Kirby, Seamus Bastible (0-1), Eoghan Galvin, Dale Counihan (Capt), Theo Diggin (1-2), Paddy Fitzgibbon (0-1), Cian O’Sullivan, Fergal Ryan (0-1).

Subs used: Declan Clifford (ht), Calvin Foley (ht), Jessie O’Sullivan (40m), Darren Bastible (49m), Seán Tansley (55m), Micheál Dillon (56m).

League and Town League.  We were due to play Na Gaeil in Killeen on Monday evening last (12th June) in the opening round of the Town League (check Club Website for Report).
