AUSTIN Stacks will remember a player who died tragically last April with a hurling tournament in his memory during the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Twenty-nine year old Trevor Barrett took ill suddenly at the beginning of April and died later that month on Easter Sunday in Cork University Hospital.

On Friday night, Austin Stacks launched the ‘The Trevor Barrett Memorial Hurling Tournament’ in honour of their late clubman.

The draw for the games took place on the night with Trevor’s girlfriend Lorraine Counihan and county hurling officer Gerard McCarthy drawing the teams. Trevor’s parents Betty and Richard and siblings Paul and Gillian were also present.

The tournament will take place at the Stacks grounds in Connolly Park and Caherslee GAA Grounds on Saturday, August 2, which would have been dual player Trevor’s 30th birthday weekend.

The tournament features eight sides overall, five from Kerry: Austin Stacks, Causeway, Crotta O’Neills, Abbeydorney and St Patrick’s East Kerry.

Three teams are coming from further afield: Lis Ocra and Lismire, both from Cork and Wolfe Tones from Clare.

As well as remembering Trevor, the tournament hopes to raise funds for Bru Columbanus.  They are an independently run charity that provided accommodation for Trevor’s family while he was in intensive care in Cork.

After the presentation of the shield to the winning team, there will be food and entertainment along with a raffle of spot prizes that have been donated by local businesses.
