A stretch of the R556 (just north of Abbeydorney village) will close to two way traffic in two weeks time.

A STRETCH of the main Tralee to Ballybunion road is to close to two-way traffic in two weeks time for an indefinite period.

The Dale Road (Rathscannell), located on the R556 between Abbeydorney and Ballyduff, has been the scene of many accidents over the years.

Upgrading works are scheduled to start next year but detailed investigations are necessary before construction begins due to the nature of the ground and to mitigate against any potential risks in construction.

Because of these works, the road will close to northbound traffic from the Tralee side. Motorists will have to veer left to Killahan after coming out of Abbeydorney and join the main road again at Ballinclogher Cross.

Motorists travelling south from Ballybunion/Ballyduff will use the road as normal. The one-way system will be in place while the investigations are taking place.

Construction is scheduled to begin next year on the upgrade to the 2.2km stretch after funding of €300,000 allocated by the Department of Transport for ground investigations, land acquisition, and planning permission was allocated earlier this year.
