The red section of the R556 on the map above, just after Abbeydorney village will be closed to traffic from next Monday.

THE R556 road between Collins’ Cross near Abbeydorney and Ballinclogher Cross (known as the Rathscannell Road) will close to traffic from Monday next, July 8, to facilitate significant roadworks.

The road was scheduled to close to two-way traffic from late May, but this never materialised and now the road will be closed to all vehicles.

However, the council has acknowledged the inconvenience for local residents and every effort will be made to mitigate the impact on them, so access for residents will be maintained at all times, but the road will be closed to all non-resident traffic.

Diversions will be in place via Lixnaw village (R557) and all diversions will be clearly signposted. While traffic can also divert at Collins’ Cross via Killahan, motorists, particularly HGVs, are asked to divert via the R557 through Lixnaw.

Signage indicating the diversions in place have been erected and Kerry County Council will provide updates through the media and on its website as the work progresses.

Grant aid of €300,000 has been provided by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport to progress improvements on the R556. It is necessary to carry out detailed investigations on the underlying ground conditions ahead of any construction work and this work will commence next week.
