A KERRY man has won a National Garda Youth Award, presented at a ceremony yesterday at the Midlands Park Hotel in Portlaoise.
There were 23 awards were handed out to celebrate the contributions of young people around the country, both individually and as part of groups at the awards.
Patrick Clifford from Milltown had already been chosen as the Overall winner of the Lee Strand Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards in September and won an Individual Award yesterday.

Twenty-one year old Patrick and his brothers Jack (15) Andrew (8) and Conor (5), lost their mother Elaine to cancer in August 2021 and then their father Padraig to the same illness in January of this year.
Patrick became his siblings main carer since then and his extraordinary strength and resilience was acknowledged at the awards.
This year’s awards were presented by Deputy Commissioner, Anne Marie McMahon and Assistant Commissioner, Roads Policing and Community Engagement, Paula Hilman.
In 2019, the National Garda Youth Awards were established by Garda Commissioner, Drew Harris in recognition of the meaningful work of so many young people in communities all across Ireland.
LEE Strand and Kerry Garda launched the 25th year of the Lee Strand Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards on Saturday in the Ballyroe Heights Hotel in Tralee.
The awards are held for youths between the ages of 13 and 21 years and recognise the great contribution young people have made and continue to make to their communities in Kerry.
The awards will be presented at a celebratory dinner awards ceremony in the Ballyroe Heights Hotel, Tralee on Friday, September 30.
This year 20 Merit Awards will be presented to individuals who have made a positive contribution to their community and make it a better place to live.

A Group Award will also be presented to groups of two or more people who have made an impact to their community. The Special Achievement Award will be presented to an individual who has overcome difficult circumstances, has defied all the odds and whose commitment deserves recognition.
A Community Safety Award will be presented to an individual who through crime prevention or a safety initiative/innovation has made their community a safer place to live. The Overall Winner of the Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Achievement 2022 will also be presented.

THE annual Lee Strand & Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards took place live on Radio Kerry on Saturday night and a Tralee woman was announced as the overall winner.
Twenty-one-year-old Amy Roche from Tralee was nominated by Lisa Curran for all her amazing help with Lisa’s 10-year-old son Christopher who is autistic.

The event was hosted by Alan Finn and was a tremendous success with listeners tuning in from all over Kerry, across Ireland and abroad.
The awards show recognised the great contribution young people have made and continue to make to their communities in Kerry.
A total of 25 awards were presented with each nominator reading a citation for each of the award winners. The award show also included interviews, music and a host of celebrity guests also paid tribute to this year’s award winners.
The Special Achievement Award Winner was Emma Kerin, Scartaglen nominated by St Mary Basketball Castleisland.

OVER 200 people from across the county attended the Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards 2019 in the Ballyroe Heights Hotel in Tralee on Friday night.
The evening commenced with dinner and was followed by a presentation of 25 awards, accompanied with an inspiring citation of each winner’s achievements.
There were 20 Merit Awards, two Group Awards, a Special Achievement Award, a Community Safety Award and the Overall Winner Award presented on the night.
The awards scheme which first commenced in 1998 are held for youths between the ages of thirteen and twenty one years and recognise the great contribution young people have made and continue to make to their communities in Kerry.

Sixteen year old Sophie Daly Wilson from Caherciveen was announced as the Overall Winner. She was described as a young lady with enormous enthusiasm and energy to devote to all things positive.
Sophie is a talented musician/song writer and has been involved in numerous events receiving awards for her accomplishments in music and song such as Scór, Irish Youth Music Awards and the Colaiste na Sceilge Award for Junior Music Student of the Year for the past two years.
Sophie is extremely proactive in her local community and is involved in the KDYS Social Action Group, KDYS Band Project, Wellness Ambassador in the KDYS, a Junior Leader in Cahersiveen KDYS Youth Club and is also a keen public speaker, representing her school in UCC.
Sophie loves her Nana and manages to find time to take her to bingo, mass, football matches and they play an odd game of cards together.
Two Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Group Awards were presented on the night to The Fairtraders, Castleisland Community College and Be Dementia Aware, Killarney Community College.
The Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Special Achievement Award was presented to Shauna Foley, Listowel. The Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Community Safety Award was presented to Michael Carroll, Padraig Crean, Michael Kirby students of CBS The Green.

Seventeen year old Ian O’Connell from Killarney was described as an outstanding individual, an inspiration to all and a true real life hero when he was announced as the Overall Winner of the Lee Strand Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards 2018.
When Ian was 16 years old, he became paralysed from the neck down after falling off his bike in the Killarney National Park.
The entire country was inspired by Ian O’Connell’s remarkable interview on the Late Late Show last May. His motto “If I can’t stand up, I will stand out” has made him a national hero for his positive attitude to life.
Ian was presented with a specially commissioned crystal trophy and the Overall Winner Certificate to mark his achievement.
The Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Group Award was presented to the Sporting Chance Programme – National Learning Network. The Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Special Achievement Award was presented to Ciarán Sears in Tralee.
The Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Community Safety Award was presented Kevin Lenihan, Eamon Nolan and James McDonnell from Castleisland Community College.

Nineteen year old Dale O’Carroll from Greenville in Listowel was described as inspirational when he was announced as the Overall Winner of the Lee Strand Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards 2017.

Dale was presented with a specially commissioned crystal trophy and the Overall Winner Certificate to mark his achievement.
Dale who plays basketball with Special Olympics in Tralee offers great encouragement with their younger participants.
Dale who works in SuperValu in Listowel regularly volunteers in Listowel Garden Centre and in the summer he volunteered at Deenagh Lodge Coffee shop in Killarney.
He was also recognised for his dedication to his Nan who is 85 years old and lives in Ballybunion. Dale loves spending time with his Nan and visits her every day to help with chores and sing songs together.
He is always smiling, he lights up the room with joy and has a positive attitude whenever he goes.
The four Distinction Award Winners were: Saoirse Casey, Crag, Castleisland; Miriam Hanlon, Asdee Village, Listowel; Ciara Lynch, Caherleaheen, Tralee and Abbi O’Mahoney, Ballydribeen, Killarney.

Timmy, a third year student at St Michael’s College in Listowel was described at the awards as an inspiration and a shining example to the young people both in school and in his community.
Timmy has been involved in many fundraising initiatives in school for charities and also for his local GAA Club St Senans.
Timmy plays an important role with his local youth club and also helps out with the local coursing club. Timmy was praised for being a genuine, dependable, modest, hardworking young man who gives up his time to support the less fortunate in his community and also helping out his neighbours.
The five Distinction Award Winners were: Michaela Buckley O’Riordan, Muckross, Killarney; Megan Duggan, Headford, Killarney; Diarmuid Lynch, Kielduff, Tralee; Alison Jones, Farmers Bridge, Tralee and Shay Walsh, Scartaglen, Killarney.
The five distinction winners each received a Children of Lir bronze trophy and a Distinction Award Certificate to mark their achievement in this year’s awards.
The Voluntary Group Achievement Award 2016 was presented to Kerry Comhairle na nÓg.
The youth council comprises of over 60 members and provides young people with the opportunity to be involved in the development of local services and policies.
Kerry Comhairle na nÓg meet monthly in Tralee and Killarney to discuss topics such as mental health, education, substance misuse and bullying.

THE official launch of the Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards 2016 was held this week at Lee Strand, to look for young people whose achievements deserve to be acknowledged.
Since 1998 the awards have rewarded the achievements of young people from Kerry between the ages of 14 years and 19 years.
The winners will be announced at a celebratory function in the Ballyroe Heights Hotel, Tralee on Friday, January 27, 2016. Awards will be presented for the Overall Winner, Certificates of Distinction, Certificates of Merit, a Voluntary Group Award and the Hall of Fame Award.

Speaking at the launch Chief Superintendent Con Cadogan stated; “An Garda Síochána are delighted to be associated with the Lee Strand Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards. We often underestimate the worth of our youth who are both innovative and important to our future. It is important to recognise their excellence in the area of sports, arts, culture, charities or caring for a relative or friend.
“The awards have a positive effect on our wider community and I would like to extend our appreciation and thanks to Lee Strand for their continued sponsorship and support over the years. A special thank you also the media for publically recognising and promoting the awards on our behalf,” he said.
John O’Sullivan, General Manager, Lee Strand stated; “Lee Strand has a strong commitment to supporting initiatives within the local community and we are delighted once again to support the Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards. The awards provide a great opportunity to celebrate and recognise the achievements of the young people of Kerry, who have made a positive impact within their local community.
“This year we are also calling for nominations for the Hall of Fame Award. This award will recognise the community service of individuals of all ages who have made a positive impact working with Kerry’s youth over the years,” he added.
The closing date for receipt of nominations is Monday, December 5, 2016. Any member of the public can nominate a young person whom they feel has made a contribution to their local area.
Nominations are accepted from individuals, community and voluntary groups, schools and youth clubs/organisation.
The winners will be selected by a panel of five judges who are community volunteers from around the county under the chairmanship of Chief Superintendent Con Cadogan, An Garda Síochána.

OVER 270 people from across the county attended the Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards 2015 in the Ballyroe Heights Hotel in Tralee on Friday (photos below).
The celebration commenced with dinner and was followed by a presentation of 32 awards, accompanied with an inspiring citation of each winner’s achievements. Twenty six Merit Awards, four Distinction Awards, the Voluntary Group Award and the Overall Winner Award were presented on the night.
Tralee winners included Darren Burns, Ross Sugrue, Leanne Hannafin, Jebin John, Eabha Mc Carthy, Alan Mc Loughlin, Ryan O’Donnell and Robbie O’Sullivan.
Assistant Commissioner John O’Mahoney commended 18 year old Brendan Coppinger from Muckross in Killarney who was announced as the Overall Winner of the Lee Strand Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards 2015.
Brendan was presented with a specially commissioned crystal trophy and the Overall Winner Certificate to mark his achievement. Brendan, a 5th year student at St Brendan’s College in Killarney completed many tasks as part of his transition year, including the ECDL Programme, the log-on-learn programme and also received a Bronze Gaisce.
Brendan also volunteered to train Killarney Celtic U11s. At a training session Brendan along with Coach Eugene Cosgrave saved the life of his fellow Transition Year Student Tom Geaney who had gone into cardiac arrest.
As a result of this incident a new local project in Killarney has been set up called Operation Resuscitation.
The plan will offer specialist life-saving training to schools, sports clubs and individuals and aims to train hundreds of people in the locality, thereby increasing survival rates by up to 26%.
Brendan’s courage has been recognised locally and nationally and he has appeared on Morning Ireland and The Afternoon Show on RTE 1 with Dáithí Ó Sé and Maura Derrane.

THE call has gone out for nominations for the Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards 2015.
The awards scheme which first commenced in 1998 is designed to acknowledge the volunteering endeavours of young people from Kerry between the ages of 14 years and 19 years.

GARDAI in Listowel are investigating a fatal road traffic collision which occured on the Lisselton to Ballybunion Rd on in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The collision between a car and a pedestrian occurred at approximately 4am at Barnadarrig, Ballybunion. A 24 year old male pedestrian was fatally injured and pronounced dead at the scene and has been removed to the morgue at Kerry General Hospital.
The 25 year old man who was driving the car was also injured and taken to Tralee General Hospital but his injuries are described as not serious.
The road is currently closed between Lisselton Cross and Ahafone Cross to facilitate a Forensic Collision examination and diversions are in place.
Gardai in Listowel are appealing for witnesses or anyone who may have been on the Lisselton to Ballybunion Rd between 2am and 4am to contact them in Listowel on 068 21000, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.

The celebration commenced with dinner and was followed by an individual presentation of twenty seven awards, accompanied with an inspiring citation of each winner’s achievements.
Twenty one Merit Awards, four Distinction Awards, the Voluntary Group Award and the Overall Winner Award were presented on the night.
Sixteen year old Seán Kelliher, from Fossa, Killarney was announced as the Overall Winner. Seán was presented with a specially commissioned crystal trophy and the Overall Winner Certificate to mark his achievement.
Seán was recognised for his numerous volunteering achievements within the local community.
Among the Tralee area winners on the night were Presentation Tralee student and John Mitchels GAA member Patriz Brosnan, from Abbeydorney, who won one of four Distinction Awards presented on the night.
Winning Merit Awards were Maura Adams, Rebecca Donovan, Seán Dowling and Gavin Connolly, Michelle Lynch, Kielduff and Connor O’Donoghue.
The Voluntary Group Achievement Award 2014 was presented to the Killarney No Name Club.
