AN inspiring local organisation in Kerry has won big at this year’s National Lottery Good Causes Awards 2024.

It follows on  from their Heritage Council award in honour of the legendary GAA commentator Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh, which was presented last week.

The Maharees Conservation Association took home the top prize in the Heritage category, winning an impressive €10,000. The organisation was established in 2016 to enhance, protect, and preserve this unique coastline through community-led climate adaptation.

The volunteer-run organisation works closely with residents, visitors, NGOs, state agencies, and the local authority to safeguard the Maharees sand dune system and its habitats, as well as, to preserve the community and heritage of the area.

In 2021, the group received funding from the National Lottery Good Causes, which enabled them to develop the Maharees Heritage Trail. This mobile-accessible, self-guided trail features imagery, video, and both text and audio descriptions of 20 points of interest around The Maharees, exploring various aspects of the area’s natural, cultural, living, and built heritage.

The Maharees Conservation Association’s proactive spirit, commitment to environmental protection, and willingness to share knowledge with other coastal communities impressed the judges of the National Lottery Good Causes Awards.

Their efforts were recognised with winning the 2024 Heritage category award, highlighting them as a shining example of how local action can make a significant difference.

This year’s Good Causes Awards ceremony took place in Killashee House Hotel in Co. Kildare. Marty Whelan hosted the event and was joined by a star-studded line-up of guest presenters who handed out category awards, including TV personality Daithí Ó Sé, author and radio presenter Anna Geary, the inspiring Deborah Somorin, renowned architect and TV presenter Hugh Wallace and dancing sensation Arthur Gourounlian.

The Awards are made up of seven categories: Sport, Health & Wellbeing, Heritage, Arts & Culture, Community, Youth and Irish Language.

How National Lottery Funding Is Helping Recovery Haven Kerry

.
Funding from the National Lottery in 2023 allowed Recovery Haven Kerry to continue offering free hydrotherapy classes for its clients.

HYDROTHERAPY classes are providing cancer patients in Kerry and surrounding counties with an outlet to help them claim back a fun and active life.

Recovery Haven Kerry offers a safe place for cancer patients, their families and carers to access free emotional and psychological support and information through phone support, counselling, complementary therapies, courses, classes and online group activities.

Following funding from the National Lottery in 2023, it was able to continue offering free hydrotherapy classes for its clients. The classes focus on gentle exercises to improve fitness, mobility and mental health as well as provide pain relief.

Continued below…

.

“We were already providing a lot of free classes – such as yoga and Pilates – and were interested in branching out into other therapies,” says Marisa Reidy of Recovery Haven Kerry.

“We approached Kerry Sports Academy (at the Munster Technological University) about it and they loved the idea. The National Lottery funding in 2023 allowed us to provide five eight-week slots and it was a huge success. As soon as we launched it, people jumped at the chance to do it and some of the feedback has been incredible.”

Adults of all ages on their cancer journey participated in the classes. One said it gave him “the confidence to get back to a more normal, active life”.

Another said it was the best part of her week. “It put me in an amazing mental state. It was the best part of my week – the fun, the exercises, the friendship and the feeling of normality.”

The centre is continuing with the hydrotherapy classes and between 12 – 14 people are benefiting from them each week.

Recovery Haven Kerry also received Good Causes funding in 2019 and the centre was also a regional winner at the National Lottery Good Causes Awards in 2022.

In 2019 additional funding was used to provide 100 free one-to-one counselling for adults and young people at the centre during 2020.

These sessions were vital at a time when the country faced rigid Covid19 restrictions which impacted hugely on vulnerable cancer patients and their families leading to an increase in demand for counselling.

“It didn’t tell me how much I’d won but it told me that I’d won big. I logged into my account, half expecting to see I’d won another €4, and I could never have prepared myself for the fright that I got when I seen that there was a €1 million prize on my ticket. It was such an incredible feeling.”

“I’ve managed to get over the initial shock of becoming a millionaire and of course I’ve also had to convince my family that this really happened! We will take some time out before we decide what to do with the money, but we’ll be sensible. We want to pay off our mortgage and some bills first but after that, we’ll focus on looking after family members as much as we can,” he said.

“Of course, it’s my own fault that she didn’t believe me straight away because I am such a messer and would totally pretend that I’d won – but this time there was no joking! She eventually took the phone and checked the ticket while I called out the numbers. It was only then that she believed me and the two of us were sat there counting the zeros making sure it was definitely real,” he said.

“I was on to the Claims Department first thing the following Monday to confirm the win. Part of me had worried that my phone had been hacked and it was a horrible trick being played! I was delighted to hear that it was definitely real.”

The online winner admitted that having the ticket in his online account saved him a lot of worry over the past two weeks: “I’m so glad I played online because I’m not sure that I’d be able for the pressure of minding a physical ticket. It was a long two weeks getting organized for our trip up here to pick up the cheque so I can only imagine what I’d be like with keeping a ticket safe on top of that. I am thrilled to finally have the cheque in my hand and to make plans with the family for what we’ll do. Looking at houses and planning for our future is most definitely top of the list – the timing is perfect!”

We are a very small, close knit community down here in Beaufort and I can guarantee that whoever it is, it will be such a well deserving prize. We are a small local convenience store and post office with five employees so it’s a tremendous feeling here knowing that one of our customers is over a quarter of a million euro richer this morning. I know the entire village will be buzzing at this news so we wish them every bit of success with their win,” he said.
