Daly Encourages Students To Take Part In Survey On Accommodation Crisis

.
Deputy Pa Daly.

SINN Féin TD for Kerry, Pa Daly, has invited students across Kerry to share their experiences of the student accommodation crisis in the party’s online survey.

The survey is an opportunity for students and apprentices to share their stories about how the housing crisis is impacting on their studies and wider college experience.

It comes amid growing concerns among students about whether there will be sufficient suitable accommodation as the new academic term begins.

“Sinn Féin have launched our survey to hear students’ experiences of the college accommodation crisis,” said Deputy Daly. “We want to hear from students in Kerry about how the crisis is affecting you personally.”

“I am being contacted everyday by huge numbers of students and families in Kerry who are worried sick about how they will secure suitable college accommodation in time. Many are concerned they will have to make long, exhausting and expensive commutes to college because they can find nothing nearby. Students should be able to focus on their studies, not face the added stress and hassle of navigating the housing crisis.”

Deputy Daly is encouraging student to make their voices heard in the survey. To take part click on the following link https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/StudentHousingCrisis

Kerry Students Urged To Get Checked For STDs After Increase In Cases At UL

.

AN increase in sexually transmitted diseases at the University of Limerick campus has prompted a call for Kerry students, who have been in the area recently and were sexually active, to get checked out.

A rise in cases of gonorrhoea and chlamydia has been reported at the university, which is working with the HSE on the issue.

An email was circulated on Wednesday to students at UL about the ‘outbreak’.

“These are sexually transmitted diseases as a result of unprotected sex. It is possible to have these conditions without having any type of symptoms. If you have had unprotected sex or have any concerns we would strongly advise you to contact the Student Health Centre or your GP,” read the email.

The university confirmed it was “working closely with the HSE following the identification of an increase in the number of students presenting with gonorrhoea and/or chlamydia to the UL Student Health Centre”.

Speaking to Radio Kerry yesterday, IT Tralee Students Union President Steve Clifford said there is no such outbreak on campus in Tralee.

However, he asked any students who were in Limerick in the past few weeks and were sexually active to get checked out with their GP.

AROUND 300 people glammed up at the Ballyroe Heights Hotel last night for the annual IT Tralee Clubs & Societies Ball.

Staff and students from the college arrived early and posed for photos before heading up for the meal, entertainment and the presentation of special awards.

“It’s an end of year event where all the staff, students, sponsors and mentors involved can gather to celebrate participation and achievement in sport and societies,” said Jennifer Healy, Sports Officer at IT Tralee.

The college held an awards night at the North Campus on Tuesday, but last night there were four more accolades given out. The Society of the Year award went to the MAG (Manga Anime and Gaming) Society, Society Person of the Year was given to Sean Og O’Sullivan, the Team of the Year went to the Ladies Basketball and Sports Person of the Year was Denise Dunlea.

All involved had a fantastic night and they certainly made the effort to look great as can be seen in our images below. Scroll down for photos…

HUNDREDS of students and their families converged on The Brandon Hotel on Friday morning for the annual IT Tralee graduation ceremony.

Caps and gowns were donned by the students as they are being conferred over three sessions throughout the day in the School of Health & Social Sciences; School of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and the School of Health and Social Sciences.

The President of IT Tralee, Dr Oliver Murphy, in his address welcomed the students and commended them on their hard work in attaining their qualification.

“You have worked hard to get to this day, and while today sees the end of one journey, the new chapter of your career and future is only just beginning,” said Dr Murphy.

“As we emerge from an era of austerity and recession we rely on you, the graduates of 2014, to lead us into the future and make your mark on the nation and the world,” he continued.

Over 900 graduates received awards at Higher Certificate, Bachelor Degree, Honours Bachelor Degree, Masters Degree and Doctorate Degree level.

In conclusion Dr Murphy wished all the graduates the best for the future.

“Everyone here today is a success story and we acknowledge the personal achievement of each individual. This day is for you and marks the beginning of a new chapter in your life. I hope you have a rewarding and fulfilling life and that all of your dreams are achieved.”

No Accommodation Problems For ITT Students

Credit Union 600x400

Ben Slimm 1
Ben Slimm, President of IT Tralee Students Union.

WHILE it emerged this week that CAO applications to IT Tralee increased by 23% and there will be 565 international students staying in town, they’ll have no shortage of places to stay.

Apparently, Tralee is one of the cheapest places in Ireland for students to find accommodation according to ITT Students Union President, Ben Slimm.

“There’s no problem finding a place to stay in town,” said Ben. “In fact, there is a surplus of accommodation for students. The average rent in the purpose-built student apartments is about €65 a week, while rent in private dwellings costs about €45 plus a week for students sharing,” he said.

Ben and the team in the SU have been working all summer preparing for the September influx, but it was Monday when his phone started ringing in earnest.

“It started at 7.30am and it’s been busy since. You have students ringing from all over the country to get information on the best place to stay, what campus they’ll be in and just info on the town,” said Ben.

Tralee has also seen an increase in international students, which Ben feels is good for the town culturally and financially.

Among the nations represented in the ITT this year will be Brazil, Germany, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Canada.

7 Leaving Cert Study Tips You Probably Shouldn’t Follow

Not long now lads and lassies! But don’t fret, because Ryan Higgins and Oscar Brophy here at TraleeToday.ie have the perfect study tips to prepare for the Leaving Cert…ok, maybe not that perfect

1. Tidy your desk

Before you can even hope to start studying, you need to prepare a harmonious study area in order to achieve optimum energy flow.

Taking cues from the Chinese art of Fung Shui, arrange the furniture in your study room in a circular pattern around your desk to ensure all the essential knowledge-auras emanating from the objects in the room flow into your spiritual focal point.

The best time to start this process is at 11pm on the night before your first exam.

Remove valuables from desk before attempting

2. Choose the right study music

Some say background music hinders study. Well, what do ‘Some’ know? Slap on whatever feels right – be it Avicii’s Greatest Hits or NOW! That’s What I Call Death Metal – anything to help break the monotony and study til the break of dawn. Personally, nothing gets me more pumped for an exam than a bit of Wu-Tang.

3. Turn off your Internet connection

How many times have you said, “OK, tonight’s the night – I’m going to study like a madman!” only to have Facebook suck up your fast-dwindling study hours?

It’s happened to the best of us and – unless you have the concentration of a Buddhist monk – it’ll happen to you. The only safe option is to unplug your router and put it in the bin. You can buy a new one after the exams.

I know he throws his computer screen away, but there are litterally no gifs of people throwing routers away

4. Make comprehensive but concise notes

We all know school books have a lot of less-than-necessary information in them. Sometimes it helps if you extract the points you absolutely need to know and make a note of them.

These notes can then be studied, referenced later or written on to your forearms for revision during the exam. There are other methods that allow you to study during the exam with your classmates:

that class in Practical Origami really paid off

5. Put on the kettle

Tea is proven to increase memory retention by up to 20%. Five cups a day and you’ve doubled your memory! So just stick on the kettle, leaf through a book and wait for all this to blow over.

I studied Shaun of the Dead for my English exam. Then I found out it wasn't even on the curiculum.

6. Don’t do what Dexter did

As I’m sure you’ll all remember, there was a time when Dexter out of 90s Kids Show Dexter’s Laboratory tried to use the power of Science to get around actually studying for a French exam – with hilarious but disastrous results. So yeah, avoid that.

7. Keep your eyes on the prize

If you study hard, not only will you have all summer to slack off, you also have a better chance of getting in to college which in turn will give you a marginally better chance of getting a job and making CA$$$H MON€Y, Y’ALL!  This will be you:

Suit and computer not included
