Minister for Education Norma Foley, T.D., together with the Teaching Council’s Chair, Seán McMahon, and Director, Tomás Ó Ruairc, launching FÉILTE.

TEACHERS from two Tralee schools will take part in FÉILTE, the largest educational event in Ireland, which takes place online for the first time on this Saturday, October 3, from 10.30am to 4.30pm.

FÉILTE (the Festival of Education in Learning and Teaching Excellence) gives teachers the opportunity to collaborate and share their work with each other and with the wider public.

Teachers from Coláiste Gleann Lí and CBS The Green, as well as from Killorglin Community College, will have projects showcased at the event, details of which were launched by Minister for Education Norma Foley, T.D.

Minister Foley commented: “I warmly welcome the return of FÉILTE this year, with its new and innovative format which is representative of the immense contribution and adaptability of the teaching profession.”

Now in its eighth year, FÉILTE provides a unique platform for teachers to share innovative teaching and learning practices, and to network with each other and the public. In response to government guidelines, FÉILTE will be online, opening the full event to a global audience.

Ashley Sabourin from Coláiste Gleann Lí will present a showcase titled “The Power of Reading Aloud”, described by the teacher as “one of the best advertisements for progress”.

Research suggests that reading aloud is more important than worksheets, homework and book reports, but is often neglected at secondary school level with the pressures of curriculums and exam demands.

Ashley hopes that this project has planted the seed for all teachers to incorporate more allocated read aloud times in their lessons, not just in the English classroom.

Jennifer Stack of CBS The Green will hold a workshop titled “How Data and Visual Literacy Tools Enhance Student Engagement and Learning”.

The workshop is based on a demonstration designed by Jennifer for schools that empowers teachers by showing how to access free data and visual literary software and training.

These teacher-friendly tools and products can then be used in conjunction with sustainable development goals to create future-ready, 21st century digital citizens. This future cohort will be connected and equipped with the solutions to investigate and provide creative solutions that will maintain the wellbeing of the world’s natural and built environment, with inclusion and equality for all its inhabitants.

Also, Con Moynihan of Killorglin Community College, will present a launch video titled “Tusla Education Support Service”.

Tusla Education Support Service (TESS) was launched at the Mansion House on November 5th2019. This launch video explains the three strands of TESS, namely the Home School Community Liaison Scheme (HSCL), the School Completion Programme (SCP) and the Education Welfare Service (EWS). The three strands work in an integrated was to promote and support School attendance, participation and retention.

The 45 showcases – which display a multitude of projects by teachers covering a range of themes including wellbeing, cross-curricular, STEM, inclusion, collaborative practice and more – will also be available online in a virtual format via a tailor-made Expo area.

Almost 100 different schools and education centres from across the country are contributing to the event, either via a showcase, hosting a workshop, or coordinating a TeachMeet.

The event is open to teachers and the general public so to see the full programme, click on the following link https://hopin.to/events/feilte2020
