A TABLE quiz with a difference will be held next week where the family of a Ballymac woman who died from cancer will be remembered.

The daughters of Marian McCarthy, who passed away in January, will host a Harry Potter-themed quiz to raise funds for the Irish Cancer Society. The quiz takes place next Wednesday night in O’Donnells Mounthawk, but it’s not the only event the family are taking part in to honour Marian.

“There are 12 of us going to Dublin on the 6th of June for the VHI women’s mini marathon and we are doing it in aid of the Irish Cancer Society,” said her daughter, Michelle. “It’s a charity very close to our hearts. My mother passed away on January 27 after being diagnosed with Myeloma 18 months previous. Mom was always a very active person, very involved in cycling and used to be a cross country runner in her younger days. She participated in the mini marathon along with her siblings to raise money for motor neuron disease after their father Sean passed from the illness in 2002. She and her five sisters then went on to complete the New York City marathon in 2005 for the same cause,” said Michelle.

“Taking a leaf out of my mom’s book, we all rounded up together and decided to do the mini marathon in her honour. Her three daughters, myself, Deirdre, Claire, god-daughter/niece Martina, sisters Breda, Mairead, Eileen, Trish, Denise and her three sister in laws Denise, Hannah and Siobhan all plan to go to Dublin on June 6th,” said Michelle.

“The idea of the table quiz was my sister Deirdre’s – a die-hard Harry Potter fan – which she actually pitched to Mom last year sometime. We never knew it was going to be hosted in her honour,” said Michelle.

“We don’t believe there has been a table quiz like this in Tralee before. It’s set to be a fun-filled magical night. There’ll be themed prizes including for best dressed (optional) and for first and last place. You don’t have to be a die hard fan, it’s all in aid of a good cause,” said Michelle. The quiz begins at 8.30pm, €5 per person and €20 per table.
