Thousands In Funding Announced For Fenit Club And Society

TEN Kerry fisheries projects will share funding of €162,000 this year under the Fisheries Local Action Group or FLAG, including two in Fenit.

The southwest FLAG strategy is administered by Bord Iascaigh Mhara and cofunded by the EU.

The funding for Kerry coastal communities was announced  by Junior Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin.

Fenit Coastal Rowing Club will receive €4,500 for a new rowing boat, and Tralee Oyster Fisheries Society based in Fenit, receives €3,300 from the fund.

The southwest Fisheries Local Action Group (FLAG) is one of seven FLAG regions that will benefit from a total of €12m over the course of the strategy that will continue for the next three years.

Announcing the funding at Jack’s Coastguard Restaurant in Cromane, Minister Griffin said the role of the FLAG strategy was to rejuvenate Kerry’s coastal communities, foster enterprise, and create employment.

The biggest beneficiary is Murphy Marine Service in Valentia, which receives over €62,800 (€62,832) for expansion of its business services. The company currently employs 14 people.

Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance gets €23,700 (€23,740) to help it develop a Blueways strategy, and Valentia Island Ferries receives €23,500 towards the design of a new car ferry.

Derrynane Inshore Rescue will receive €15,000 towards the cost of a new D class rescue small craft.

Other benifiicaries include Maherees Heritage (€7,800), Comharchumann Forbartha an Leith Triúigh (€7,720) and Ocean Quest Ltd (€7,250), which each receive amounts over €7,250 for various projects. Cromane Community Council will receive €6,400 towards its development plan.

In all cases, private funding has complimented grant aid to meet the total cost of the projects.
