Tipp Win Sets Up 40th Anniversary Rematch Of Beginning Of Kerry’s Golden Years

AFTER Tipperary’s win over Waterford in the Munster Championship over the weekend, Kerry now know their opposition for the semi-final clash on June 14.

Coincidentally, that meeting this month will be almost 40 years to the day since they faced the same opposition in a game which started the ‘Golden Years’ era of Kerry football.

Back on June 15, 1975 Kerry faced the premier county in Clonmel  in a game they won by 3-13 to 0-9.

On that day John Egan grabbed 2-3 in a match which featured two players from Churchill, Pat McCarthy and Batt O’Shea.

The late Ray Prendiville from Scartaglin scored the other goal while Mikey Sheehy scored two points, three came from Pat Spillane while Beaufort’s Brendan Lynch scored five points.

Who would have dreamt that day that Kerry were embarking on the greatest period in their footballing history…and who knows what the clash in two weeks will set in motion!

The team that day in 1975 was: Paudie O’Mahony (Spa); Paidí O Sé (An Gaeltacht), Ger O’Keeffe (Austin Stacks), Batt O’Shea (Churchill); Mickey O’Sullivan (Kenmare), Tim Kennelly (Listowel Emmetts), Ger Power (Austin Stacks); Ger O’Driscoll (Valentia), Denis Ogie Moran (Beale); Brendan Lynch (Beaufort), Pat McCarthy (Churchill), Pat Spillane (Templenoe); John Egan (Sneem); Ray Prendiville (Scartaglin), Mikey Sheehy (Austin Stacks).
