Tomb 3

Excavation work at the site in Killaclohane.

A NEW website has been created based on a project to conserve and excavate the oldest extant archaeological monument in the county – a portal tomb at Killaclohane, Milltown.

The Kerry County Council Archaeology Department and Kerry County Museum are behind the  innovative and unique educational website.

The project has successfully conserved the tomb for future generations, while the excavations provided an insight into how the tomb was built and the burial rites of the first farmers as they began to permanently settle the county around 4,000BC.

The website is aimed particularly at schools and addresses key areas of the curriculum as well as providing a fascinating insight into the process of archaeological excavation.

Secondary schools who would like to be involved in a project in relation to Killaclohane. Please contact Claudia or Jemma in Kerry County Museum on 066- 7127777.
