TRALEE Bay Wetlands are to host a number of events to coincide with the 52nd anniversary of the signing of the Ramsar Convention, an international agreement for the preservation and wise use of global wetlands.

Each year all over the world on February 2, organisations, schools and individuals get together to raise awareness of the importance and value of wetlands, and how we can safeguard them for our future.

To celebrate this occasion, the Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre Eco & Activity Park will be running a schools program for both primary schools and Transition Year students available from Monday, January 23 until the end of February.

Learn why we should all care about wetlands, what kinds of animals and plants live there, and how humans are at risk from the loss of this precious habitat through a fun mix of outdoor activities and indoor sessions.

Additionally, Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre will be running a weekend of events from Saturday 4th February to Monday 6th.

These include Guided Wild Wetlands Urban Walks at 3pm on Saturday 4th, Sunday 5th & Monday 6th February at 3pm.

This guided tour will offer  a tour of the wetland, on foot, as well as giving a short talk on the ways that wetlands are vital to our future.

Suitable for both Adults & Children. Tickets can be booked in advance online. Adults €10 (and include a coffee/tea) Children accompanied by an adult free of charge.

There will also be a Nature Bay Walk of Tralee Bay Special Area of Conversation on both Saturday 4th & Sunday 5th February commencing at 11am.

Here walkers will see some of our migratory birds in their natural habitat. These birds have been coming to Tralee Bay since before it was called Tralee Bay and this time of year is the best time to see these birds in huge flocks.

Some iconic species you might see are the Canadian Pale Bellied Brent Geese, Red Shanks, Greenshanks and Curlew to name but a few.

Again this event is suitable for both adults & children. Adults are €10 and accompanying children are free of charge.

Suitable outdoor clothing and foot wear are required. Tickets can be purchased in advance online or from the reception desk at visitor centre.

Then on Monday, February 6 at 11am, there’ll be a Ballyseedy Walk. Discover Ireland’s Alluvial Wet Woodlands Ballyseedy is an ancient woodland meaning it has been continuously covered with trees since the mid-1600.

Along with this it is wet woodland which is an annex habitat meaning that there is precious few of these ecosystems still left in Ireland. Explore these ancient habitats with your ecologists from the wetlands.
