A KERRY GAA legend will have a green area and commemorative stone erected in his memory at a Tralee estate in which he lived.

Tralee Councillors approved a request by Cllr Norma Foley that the green area in Castlecountess be dedicated to Danno Keeffe, the winner of seven All-Ireland senior titles with Kerry, at the January meeting on Monday.

In consultation with residents, an appropriate commemorative stone with be placed in the green area. Cllr Foley welcomed the approval and said it was not before time something was done to honour the GAA legend.

The initiative was first mooted by admirers of the late Dan O Keeffe and brought to KCC by Cllr Norma Foley.

The approval of local residents was sought and with their endorsement the proposal was adopted at Monday’s meeting of the Tralee MD.

As well as his Kerry exploits, Danno Keeffe is also the most decorated footballer in Kerins O’Rahillys history and just two years ago was honoured at the club on the 50th anniversary of his death in 1967.

Danno Keeffe has an incredible roll of honour and some his achievements in his 18 seasons (1931-1948) playing for Kerry are unlikely to be equalled or surpassed.

They include;

• 7 All Ireland senior medals
• 14 Munster senior titles
• Played in 13 All Ireland finals
• Oldest player to win an All Ireland senior medal at 39 in 1946
• Goalkeeper on the Team of the Century ( 1984) and Team of the Millennium ( 2000)
• 2 Senior County Championship medals
