Our under 16 girls travelled to Cork last Saturday for a pre season tournament and we had a very tough group with Limerick Celtic, Brunnell, Fr. Matthews and St. Pauls.

Our first game was against Limerick Celtic (this was the team that beat our team by 25 points in the All Ireland final two years ago) so it was important to see had we improved and the girls answered it by returning a 27-21 win. Great start. Next up was Brunnell, this game was very close for three quarters, we won the first 7-5, Brunnell won the second 10-5 to leave the score 15-12 in favour of Brunnell at half time. second half of the game our defence worked extremely hard and we lost the third 6-2 to find ourselves 21-14 down going into final quarter where we worked extremely hard to win it 14-2 to give us a 28-23 win.

Next up was Fr. Matthews and with four or five Irish Internationals it was always going to be a tough encounter but fair play to the girls they kept trying from start to finish under immense full court press from the tip off, we lost by 38-13. So onto our last game against St. Pauls knowing that we had qualified for the semi-final. Again our girls worked very hard and after the first quarter which we won 13-11, we controlled the final three quarters 7-2, 6-0 and 5-0 to run out 31-13 winners.

So it was onto the semi-final where we faced Waterford Wildcats, a very big side but we did well for the first half winning the first quarter 14-12, losing the second 12-6 and then tiredness set in plus the fact we had lost Rachel Killgallen through injury and Wildcats won the third 10-2 and the fourth 17-3 to run out 51-25 winners. But the girls had an enjoyable day and the coaches learned a lot about the team as well, so it is back to training and getting ready for the League. Well Done to the squad, Rachel Ryan, Ciara Ryan, Aoife Dillane, Rebecca Conway, Rachel Killgallen, Caitlin Crowe, Mary O’Connell, Abi Casey, Alison O’Leary, Sophie Lowham, and Clodagh O’Connor.
