Intermediate Men: Team Brogue Tralee welcomed Sligo All Stars to Mounthawk Gym last Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the Hula
Hoop Intermediate National Cup. Team Brogue found it difficult to come to terms with the strength and accuracy of the experienced post player
Ronan Mc Garity in the early stages of the opening quarter.

However, through the fast pace down the stretch and the remarkable shooting of young  players Ryan Leonard and Gary Fernane from outside the arc, Team Brogue stayed in touch with the opening quarter ending 19-14 in favour of Sligo.

The second quarter proved to be the home side’s finest quarter of the game. John Dowling had the upper hand on Garity under the boards
and he assisted Fernane well, whose drives to the board sent Sligos main threat P. Hamilton into early foul trouble. This quarter was won by the home side by 7 points leaving the half time score- 38-36 in favour of Team Brogue.

The third quarter was a fairly evenly matched affair. Team Brogue introduced young guns Gary Murphy, Karl Hoffman, Darragh Devine and Robbie Dinan to provide some enthusiasm and freshness to the side.

It was basket for  basket until the end of the third quarter with the home side shading it with a beautiful three pointer from Fernane towards the end leaving it 53-48 in favour of Team Brogue heading into the final quarter.

The final quarter was a tight affair once more with the home side taking the early lead  with three early scores from Leonard who was a constant thorn in the side of the Sligo defence.

With Sligos P. Hamilton fouled out and Team Brogues Dowling and Leonard clinical on the free throw line, the home side ran out winners on a scoreline of 72-66.

Top Scorers: Ryan Leonard 31, J. Dowling 15, G. Fernane 14. Coaches Bernsen and Leonard were happy to progress to the next round of this
National Cup competition.

Womens Div 1- The Senior Women had a home game against Fr. Mathews of Cork in Mounthawk Gym on Saturday evening and lost out 52-46.
They travelled to Galway to play NUIG Mystics on Sunday with a depleted side to go down 81-49 to a very strong Galway team.

Next game is a  home game against ITC in Mounthawk on October 31st.

John o Shea: It was with great sadness that the club received the news last Friday morning of the death of John o Shea.

John was one of our most loyal and dedicated supporters of basketball for many years. Johns wife Anne was our former Club Chairperson and he supported Anne greatly in all her hard work in fundraising and managing teams who competed at National levels.

Johns daughter Deirdre played with the club for many years at  juvenile and Senior levels. John was very proud of Deirdre emerging as a very talented young basketballer who is currently playing with her college  NUIG at National level.

Johns daughter Olivia is currently coach of the u12 girls along with her mother Anne. The o Sheas loyalty and committment to  the club has been outstanding for many years.

To Anne, Olivia, Aidan and Deirdre and to all the family, the Club offers its deepest sympathies on the death of a true gentleman and friend.
