TRALEE Library will host an event next week as part of the An Garda Síochána centenary celebrations.

Earlier this year, an appeal was made to people requesting they share with An Garda Síochána any history or Garda memorabilia they may have or know of to help mark this special year and which would be displayed at libraries across the county later in the year.

Those items have now been gathered and collated and are ready to be exhibited to the general public at venues in Kerry.

They will be exhibited in Caherciveen Library this Thursday from 6:30- 8:30pm; at Carnegie Arts Centre, Kenmare on Tuesday, December 13 from 6:30- 8:30pm and finally in Tralee Library on Thursday, December 15 from 6:30- 8:30pm.

Well-known Tralee-based historian, Maurice O’Keeffe, will be present at all three events to give a presentation in respect of policing in the 1920’s to include a selection of stories indigenous to the local areas.

Several events have already been held in the Kerry Division, including presentations of Commemorative Centenary Medals/Coins and Certificates to serving and retired Garda members and Garda staff; a Centenary Open Day in Tralee and an Award Ceremony for Excellent Police Work for serving members in the Kerry Division.

The most recent Centenary event was held at Listowel Garda station on November 30 and marked the arrival of the first Civic Guards to Kerry 100 years ago to the day.
