A TRALEE man was involved in a shipwreck while taking part in the Volvo Ocean Race on Sunday.

Brian Carlin from Cloghers is a member of Tralee Bay Sailing Club and took up a position with Danish crew Team Vestas Wind who set sail in the Volvo Ocean Race in early October.

In the early hours of Sunday morning, their vessel hit a reef in the Indian Ocean 300 miles north of Mauritius and the crew had to be rescued and brought to a nearby island and all are safe and well.

The Volvo Ocean Race is a yacht race around the world, held every three years where seven boats compete in nine legs.

Mr Carlin (30) was the on-board reporter for Team Vestas Wind who was detailing daily life on the boat during the competition.
