Camogie 2017 General Roundup:

There are lots of General Team highlights to report from our general Camogie activities in 2017.

Hurl Smart Week/Bring A Friend/Come Try It Night; we were forced to cancel a visit by the Kerry Senior Camogie Team to conduct a training session on June 2.

We did not have access to Caherslee on short notice. This was a big disappointment for our players, and an embarrassment for the club as the Kerry management team had given the squad a night off to visit us.

Meet and Greet; 36 Tralee Parnells girls of all ages travelled by bus to attend a Kerry Senior Camogie Team “meet and greet” in Causeway on June 23. Our players loved it and the Seniors were delighted with the turn out.

Easter Camp, Summer Camp and Cúl Camp; players, aged 13 and under, participated in well-run and fun camps that produced vast improvement in the skill levels of participants; well done David Brick and David O’Dea for driving on the camps. Saoirse Maloney and Hannah Sharkey were on the coaching teams.

Summer Street League; we ran off a mid-summer league on Friday nights in July-Aug; we divided players into teams by school; they played in zones so younger players could safely play with older players; players enjoyed the comradery in the dog days of summer when training numbers vary weekly. It bonded girls by school in preparation for schools’ blitzes in 2018.

All-Ireland Camogie Finals; our annual club trip on Sep 10 was a huge success. 20+ players and coaches joined 20,000 camogie fans in Croke Park to see the best adult players in the country.

Skills Competition: U10’s and U12’s participated in a camogie group skills competition in Sep. This helped coaches to identify strengths and areas of improvement for the players for next season.  U16 Poc Fada; our club competition was won by Hannah Sharkey. We did not enter the county competition, run off on the June Bank Holiday (timing is not ideal with State exams commencing 2 days later).

Veronica Stack Memorial Tournament; organised by Killarney Camogie Club, U9 and U12 competitions were run off on Oct 14. 25+ Tralee Parnells players and mentors travelled by bus to Dr. Crokes’ grounds and played 3-4 Cork teams with mixed results and plenty of fun.

Alternative activities; players embraced fun activities such as the Zumba Night in May, regular parkruns on Saturday mornings by at least 10 players (not to mention siblings, parents, mentors) and a belated pizza night to celebrate the U14 league win in 2016.

Coaching/refereeing courses; 4 players participated in coaching courses, and 2 players in referees’ training run by the Munster Council.  Thank you to all of our supporters from outside and inside the club, including;  Diane Jeffers, Richard McCluskey (Tralee Parnells), Gina O’Donoghue, John Sheehan, Joe Walsh: the Kerry U14 mentors for supporting our U14 player.  Mike “Tricky” Enright, Sarah Leahy, Richard McCluskey (Tralee Parnells); the Kerry U15 and U16 mentors for supporting our U13/U14/U15/16 players.

Owen Lawlor, Teresa Reil O’Connor, Joe Walsh: the Kerry Minor mentors for supporting our U16 player.  Sponsor; Rory Kerins of Pro Plan Property Management for 2 new sets of jerseys for the U8 and U10 teams, and for his ongoing support of the club.

Club Officers; David Brick, Stephen Buttimer, Mike Roger O’Sullivan, Dermot Reen.  Schools Link/Development Officer; David O’Dea.  Club Coaches/Managers/Mentors; Names included above.

Parent; Ann Moynihan who accepted the role of Child Protection Officer on the Kerry Camogie County Board.  Families who brought players to training and matches throughout the season.  Players, for all the fun on Friday nights and on various road trips!
