Player Safety – Helmets:
The GAA would like to remind all players at all levels in all Hurling Games and Hurling Practice Sessions it is mandatory for, and the responsibility of, each individual player to wear a helmet with a facial guard that meets the standards set out in IS:335 or other replacement standard as determined by the National Safety Authority of Ireland (NSAI).

All players are advised that in the event of a head injury occurring, if the helmet being worn does not meet the standard or is modified or altered from the original manufactured state, they are not covered under the terms of the GAA Player Injury Fund.

Camogie Report to the AGM:
The following are further extracts from the Camogie Report to the AGM, covering our different teams.  Under 10 team was managed by Ann O’Loughlin with assistance from Séamus Cadogan and Luke O’Loughlin. Under 10’s trained with Under 12’s.

Under 10’s competed v. Killarney, Causeway and CillArd in various blitzes throughout the season, including Tralee Parnells-hosted events in Apr and Sep.

Under 10’s won or drew most of their matches during the season.  Older Under 10’s were invited to compete in all Under 12 fixtures.  Under 12 team was managed by Mike Roger O’Sullivan. Under 11 team was managed by Richard McCluskey.

The teams were trained by Mike and Richard, with assistance from Caroline Donnelly and Séamus Cadogan.  Older Under 12’s competed on a mixed team with Tralee Parnells boys v. various Division B sides in the spring half of the Under 12 County Hurling League. This opportunity really helped the girls to hone their skills.

Under 12’s participated in the Camogie Association’s Munster blitz, Camán To Thurles, at Semple Stadium in May v. 3 other Munster teams. There was a significant improvement in the standard of Tralee Parnells’ performance from the same competition in 2015.  Under 12’s won Division B of the County League, having competed in 6 rounds of matches v. Killarney, Causeway and CillArd.  Under 12’s competed in a combined team with another club at the annual Causeway Under 12 tournament in Sep.  Older Under 12’s were invited to compete in Under 14 fixtures and played pivotal roles in Under 14 Féile and county league finals.

Under 14 team was managed on paper by Carmel O’Shea-Maloney and Aisling Sharkey. On the field, Ger Reidy managed the team for all its significant matches! The team was trained by Gerry Devine, Pat O’Loughlin and Ger Reidy in a joint venture with Under 12 boys. For the 2016 season, the County Board consented to our request to allow Tralee Parnells Under 15 players x5 to play Under 14 at club level.

This exception allowed us to keep our older girls playing; we would not have been able to field a competitive team if they had been forced to play Under 16.  Under 14’s competed v. Killarney in Féile na nGael B competition and were narrowly defeated in the final.

Under 14’s won Division B of the County League having competed in 1 round of matches v. Killarney, Causeway and CillArd.  Under 14’s took up an invitation to travel to Bishopstown Camogie in June to participate in a Wall Ball training session and to play a friendly match.

All Tralee Parnells Under 14 players were invited to train with the squad. 3 players took up the opportunity: Lia O’Connell, Saoirse Maloney, Hannah Sharkey. All 3 Tralee Parnells players were picked for the panels that played in the Munster Under 14 Camogie Blitz in Tipp in Aug and the Cooper All-Ireland Under 14 Camogie Blitz in Dublin in Sep.

Tralee Parnells coach, Richard McCluskey, was actively involved in training the Kerry Under 14’s, a voluntary gesture that was much appreciated by the County Board.  All Tralee Parnells Under 15 players were invited to train with the Under 16 Kerry Team. 1 player took up the opportunity: Clódagh Begley. Clódagh played in all Kerry matches detailed in the 2016 Camogie Calendar attached. Clódagh was also called up to play with the Kerry minors in June.

GAA smoke- free clubs:

The GAA are supporting interested “Healthy Clubs” in going completely smoke- free in 2017.

The GAA are really promoting GAA smoke- free clubs as part of the Healthy Club project and would love if other clubs around the country followed the positive example of St Johns Volunteers in Wexford, Parteen GAA Club in Clare and St Mary’s Convoy in Donegal. The GAA would love to see Healthy Clubs lead the way in this initiative and set a positive example for other clubs.

The government have announced that they want to make Ireland completely smoke-free by 2025 and it is fantastic to see GAA clubs being the driving force behind it. Feedback is welcome to club officers on your thoughts about Tralee Parnells supporting this healthy initiative.
