TRALEE Parnells Hurling & Camogie Club was granted adult status at a meeting of the Kerry County Board last night.

It was a momentous night for the club who will now enter intermediate competitions this year. The players are predominantly young — in their late teens and early 20s — after coming up through the ranks of the club since it was reformed in 2012.

A statement on the club’s facebook page read; “This is a huge milestone in the development and expansion of hurling in our area. We warmly and sincerely thank all those who made this hugely significant decision. We are extremely grateful for the generous and farsighted support we got from all of the speakers on the night, including those from the North Kerry Hurling Board, cumann na mbunscoil Ciarraí, St. Brendan’s Hurling Club, Crotta Gaa, Na Gaeil GAA Club, Ballymacelligott G.A.A amongst others.

The arrival of a new adult GAA club is a rare event in Ireland. It is over 40 years since Kerry witnessed the creation of a new club. Now the hurling world has a new adult club and we cannot wait to get out onto the field of play with our eager young players who made their journeys up year by year through the juvenile ranks with us.”

The club currently trains and plays games at the GAA pitches in Caherslee, but it is hoped over time they will find a home of their own.
