Terry Wogan

The late Terry Wogan.

WE all woke up to the sad news this morning that Terry Wogan has died and many Tralee people will have fond memories of the broadcasting legend from his time as Rose of Tralee host.

The 77 year old broadcaster passed away surrounded by his family after a short battle with cancer.

A short statement was issued by his family: “Sir Terry Wogan died today after a short but brave battle with cancer. He passed away surrounded by his family. While we understand he will be missed by many, the family ask that their privacy is respected at this time.”

The Limerick native was presenter of the Rose of Tralee selection from 1968 to 1970 when the festival was entering its golden decade of the 1970s.

As well as being loved by Irish people, he is regarded as a British national treasure thanks to his charm, wit and fantastic broadcasting skills.

He really shot to fame during the 1980s when he presented his own prime time chat show on BBC1 days a week as well as being host of Blankety Blank.

His BBC2 radio show was a national institution for decades.

Cancer has claimed yet another much moved, high profile figure this month after the deaths of David Bowie and Alan Rickman. Another reason we’ll be glad to see the back of January.

Terry and Helen were a lovely Couple. Their visits to Tralee , always involved a great night in our home.

My Late Mum and Helen had worked together as models. My Mum had also recruited him to MC The Rose of Tralee.
My Parents attended their wedding in 1965 in Dublin.

Terry was always the same person on and off the air , full of fun , good humour , but so kind and generous too. RIP.

I heard His Aunt lived in Tralee and he used to spend holidays as a child here with her, we got to enjoy his presentation of Eurvision in UK, his humour was better than the singing ….
