THE Board of Management at a Tralee school has criticised the Government for inaction on progressing a new school building in a statement issued.

Tralee Educate Together NS is currently on the School Building list (2019-21) but they say they have not had any direct communication from the Department of Education and Skills regarding any progress or developments in relation to the school.

They say a new school building is an absolute necessity for them to deliver an educational service to their pupils as they face significant and particular difficulties in their current location at Collis Sandes in Killeen.

They board says the school building is not fit for purpose in that it is a very old building (built in 1857) and they have limited space and no school hall, as well as a small play space.

“The Department of Education and Skills pays €74,000 in rent per year to house the school. This is a scandalous amount of tax money being used on an annual basis. A state of the art school would have been built and paid for twice over for the money paid in rent since the school opened in 2002,” reads a statement from the board of management.

“The school building is proving to be the biggest obstacle to growing the school. The state of the building, lack of facilities and the limited space available at the current location has hindered plans for expansion,” concludes the statement.
