IBAL LogoTRALEE has slipped in the latest Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) survey where it is now ranked in 25th place.

In 2013, Tralee achieved 9th place in the table – which is made up of towns and cities – and was deemed “Cleaner than European Norms”. Now though, it is  “Clean To European Norms” and drops down 16 places.

In August of 2014 it was in 18th place and still held “Cleaner Than European Norms” status.

The An Taisce report on Tralee stated: “Once again Tralee is Clean to European Norms status, although this year’s result was down on 2013. A number of car parks were littered and a derelict site opposite the Manor West Hotel helped bring down the overall ranking. The streets themselves were typically free of litter.”

It’s a disappointing and puzzling result in the light of the Gold Medals Tralee achieved in the Tidy Towns and in the European-wide Entente Florale competition back in September.

Killarney came 10th in the table and is “Cleaner than European Norms”, but slips three places from 7th in 2013.

The final litter survey for 2014 by business group IBAL) showed a record 85% of Irish towns and cities were Clean to European Norms last year.

Set up in 1996, Irish Business Against Litter is an alliance of companies sharing a belief that continued economic prosperity is contingent on a clean, litter-free environment.

As part of the IBAL Anti-Litter League, An Taisce monitors towns independently and in accordance with international grading standards. The programme is run in conjunction with the Department of the Environment, Community and Local Government.
