A TRALEE teenager has won the U-16 Girls National Matchplay Pitch and Putt title.

Ella Moynihan won the title at Glenville Pitch & Putt Club in Dublin at the weekend. Ella, from Farmers Bridge, finished runner-up in both Girls U-16 National events in 2020 but went one better after a superb performance on Saturday.

Ella began the day in the group stages, placed in a group with her younger sister Sophie, making her debut in the competition.

Sophie played some very solid stuff in the group stages and won her first ever matchplay game, but unfortunately, she failed to emerge from the group stage.

After winning two of her group games and losing one to Seapoint’s Sarah Cooney, Ella managed to get out of the group in second place and into the semi finals.

In her semi final game, Ella took on Gemma Cuffe, the girl she had lost to in the final of last year’s event. Ella played some excellent pitch and putt over the course of the match in sun-scorched conditions, winning 5 up with 4 holes to play and advancing to the final.

The final saw Ella again take on Sarah Cooney, who she had lost to by the narrowest of margins in the Group Stage earlier in the day.

The match was very tight for the first 11 or 12 holes, with each girl making some stunning shots to keep themselves in the match. Ella took the lead in the back 9 and went down the last hole 1 up.

After playing the final 10 holes in 2 under par with some fantastic putts and chip-ins, Ella won the match and the competition with a clutch par on the 18th hole.

Mark O’Regan

In the Boys’ Competition, U-16 County Champion Mark O’Regan finished 3rd in his group and progressed to the Plate Section of the competition.

Mark played his best pitch and putt of the day in his quarter final game against Glenville’s Ben Byrne, winning 6 up with 5 holes to play.

Mark would take on another Glenville player in the Semi Final in Luke Kilpatrick, but he lost the game after a solid performance.
