THE organisation that has fronted a campaign to turn what was the old Limerick to Tralee railway line into a major cycling and walkway route have pulled out of managing the route.

From November 8, the Great Southern Trail Limited, will no longer manage the greenway, ending their licence with the owners CIE.

However GST Ltd say they will be happy to support any new management structure and to be represented on it.

The GST will also assist in promoting the Greenway and its further extension along the old North Kerry railway to Tralee/Fenit and looks forward to a link also being provided from Limerick City westwards to the GST at Ballingrane/Rathkeale thereby providing an attractive 120km route from the city to the sea.

The GST, which is a voluntary organisation, for a number of years had been in charge of maintenance on the route.

Kerry County Council had ongoing issues with the works on Fenit side, both with landowners  and the council acquiring owners rights from the land owned by CIE.

In July, Kerry County Council work had stopped because of lack of funding and there is no short or medium term plans to advance the project.
