A TRALEE woman has won the Journalist Of The Year Award at the Irish Magazine Awards.

Oakpark native, Maria Moynihan, won the accolade at a ceremony in Dublin last week for her work with the bimonthly, ‘Irish Country Magazine’.

The Irish Magazine Awards are the ultimate accolade for the achievements of Irish magazine publishers.

Maria is Features Editor with Irish Country Living, the weekly magazine in the Farmers Journal, but is also a columnist and writer with Irish Country Magazine.

“I’m so shocked but honoured to have received this award, and would just like to thank all the people who have trusted me to share their stories in Irish Country Magazine, which is a privilege I never take for granted. Sincere thanks also to our wonderful readers for their support since the start and of course, all the team at Irish Country Magazine,” said Maria.

Maria submitted two pieces to the judges; one on the ‘wine o’clock’ phenomenon and the other on anxiety disorder.

The judges citation stated: “Maria approaches sensitive topics with a deft touch and gains the confidence of a breadth of interviewees, resulting in articles which appeal to her readers.”

There was a double celebration for Maria on the night as Irish Country Magazine picked up the Consumer Magazine of the Year for the second time in three years.

“It was great to win it two out of the three years. They’re a great company to work for,” said Maria, who is based in Tralee, but travels all over the country in her job.

The daughter of Fred and Helena Moynihan from Oakpark, Maria is graduate of Dublin City University. She has worked with the Irish Farmers Journal since 2005. She previously worked with The Kerryman and won the EU Young Irish Journalist award in 2006.
