Tralee Woman Wins Prestigious NUI Galway Alumni Award

A TRALEE native has been announced as  a winner of one of the prestigious NUI Galway 2018 Alumni Awards.

Award-winning poet, Ailbhe Ní Ghearbhuigh, originally from Derrylea, Oakpark, is one of just seven winners to be presented with the ‘Gradam Alumni don Ghaeilge’ at the 18th annual Alumni Awards Gala Banquet on Saturday, March 3, in the Bailey Allen Hall located in Áras na Mac Léinn on campus.

Ailbhe writes in the Irish language and has read at festivals in New York, Paris, Montréal, Berlin and Ballyferriter.

In 2012 her poem Deireadh na Feide won the O’Neill Poetry Prize. Filleadh ar an gCathair was chosen as Ireland’s EU Presidency poem in 2013 and was shortlisted in 2015 for RTÉ’s ‘A Poem for Ireland’.

Coiscéim published her first book Péacadh (2008) and Tost agus Allagar (2016). A bilingual collection, The Coast Road, has just been published by The Gallery Press, with English translations by thirteen poets.

The Alumni Awards recognise individual excellence and achievements among the University’s more than 90,000 graduates worldwide.

The Awards programme boasts an impressive roll call of over 100 outstanding graduates who have gone on to honour their alma mater, including, for example, President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins; Olympian, Olive Loughnane; Rugby great, Ciarán FitzGerald; RTÉ broadcaster, Sean O’Rourke; former Attorney General, Máire Whelan; former Creganna CEO, Helen Ryan, Tony Award-winning actress, Marie Mullen and writer, Mike McCormack.
