THERE were poignant scenes at Ballymullen on Saturday afternoon at the unveiling of two new plaques, which honour Tralee’s World War I dead, at the monument to the Munster Fusiliers.
The plaques – one with the 101 names of members of the Munster Fusiliers and the other inscribed with 125 names of soldiers from other regiments – were unveiled by Mayor of Kerry Pat McCarthy and Cllr Sam Locke who had a relative who fought with the Munster Fusiliers during the war and was the driving force behind getting the plaques.
At the ceremony, a wreath was laid at each plaque and a service given by representatives from the Catholic and Church of Ireland faiths to the large crowd who gathered in the sunshine.
Descendants and relatives of people who died during that terrible war were also there for the occasion which held great importance for them. Scroll down for photos…
