A TRALEE pharmacist and a teacher in Presentation Milltown have made the long list in the new writer category of the annual  creative writing competition, Over The Edge.

Anne O’Neill, owner of O’Neill’s Pharmacy, Abbey Court, and Victoria Kennefick who is originally from Cork, but now living in town, have made the long list this year for the Galway-based event which has grown to become one of the most important competitions for emerging writers in Ireland.

Victoria entered a poem for the competition, while Anne wrote a short story called ‘Last Orders’.

“It’s about a guy in an early house in Dublin, emoting about how he is going to take his own life. It’s based on a true story I heard a while back,” said Anne, who along with Victoria, is also on the committee of Listowel Writers Week.

The Over The Edge competition is open to both poets and fiction writers worldwide and the shortlist will be announced on September 25. The overall winners will be revealed in Galway City Library on October 30.
