A FRENCH language assistant at Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí displayed WWI relics to students to celebrate Armistice Day recently.

Rachel Guillard, who has been teaching at the school, showed students war items which belonged to her great, great grandfather who fought during World War 1.

The treasured possessions included his war medal and holy medals he had worn, as well as love letters written to his wife on pieces of wood, due to the scarcity of paper around at the time.

Armistice Day is commemorated every year on November 11 to mark the peace deal signed which brought an end to the first world war.

The items gave a wonderful insight into the life of a soldier in France during the war for the Gaelcholáiste’s French and History students.

Rachel imparted information and knowledge which had been passed down through the generations in her family.
