THERE is great sadness around the county and beyond today at the passing of Weeshie Fogarty.
Weeshie was the voice of Kerry sport for many years on Radio Kerry and the station posted a tribute on their facebook page earlier today. It reads;
“It is with profound sadness that we announce the death of our friend and colleague Weeshie Fogarty. Weeshie became the voice of Radio Kerry sport from the early days of the station, as a match commentator and sports journalist.
His voice and passion for all sports but especially Kerry football are known through Kerry and beyond. Weeshie won national PPi awards for both Sports Broadcaster and Sports programme as well as multiple Mc Namee awards.
Radio Kerry General Manager Fiona Stack paid tribute to Weeshie saying his influence on Radio Kerry and the promotion of sports is immeasurable, but his legacy is also that of a gentleman who was supportive and kind to all he encountered.
On behalf of everybody at Radio Kerry we wish to extend our deepest condolences to his wife Joan and family, and to say – thank you Weeshie…”
Many heartfelt tributes have been also paid to the great man on Twitter.
Rest in Peace Weeshie, What a KERRY Legend, I’ll miss listening to your Show / from London, God Bless https://t.co/AO19JlEJ3R

#Weeshie had a unique style of presenting like no other. I remember one summer he took over the afternoon chat show on @radiokerry asking the most unusual & clever of questions. You just didn’t know what was coming next. A genius behind the mic, a gentleman off air too. RIP

Desperately sad news. I met Weeshie when I interviewed him years ago for @RTENationwide about Kerry football supporters. He was an absolute joy – courteous, humorous, generous and kind. Kerry has lost one of its Kings.

This is the saddest news. Spent a few days in Killarney before the 08 final. Spent a large part of it with Weeshie. As kind and decent a man as you’d ever meet. https://t.co/XVXX3LtQqM

Profoundly saddened to hear of the death of Weeshie Fogarty. Grew up listening to him on Radio Kerry, maybe most fondly in 2004 when I lived in Canada for a short time & listened to matches from home on a Sunday morning. Hope himself & Liam Higgins having great time above now RIP
