Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership, in collaboration with local cycling clubs, is inviting families of all ages to participate in a series of forthcoming events for National Bike Week, which runs from 10 to 18 June 2017.

Events include the ‘Pedal in the Parks’ and the inaugural ‘Any Bike Will Do’ themed cycle. These events are aimed at getting all the family involved in a cycle in the county’s amenities and encouraging more families to cycle together more often.

Pedal in the Park is now in its seventh year. Following on from the success of previous Pedal in the Parks, two fun filled events will take place next week.

Pedal in the Park Listowel, in collaboration with Finuge Freewheelers and Kerry Crusaders Cycling Clubs, takes place Sunday morning 11 June at 11.00am.

Participants will meet at Listowel Community Centre. The route will be in Listowel Town Park, presenting a choice of two distances – 2.5km for 5 to 8 year olds and 7km for 9 to 14 year olds.

Pedal in the Park Tralee, in collaboration with the Chain Gang and Kingdom Cycling Clubs, takes place on Friday evening 16 June at 7.00pm. Participants will meet at Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre. There will be two routes depending on the age of the child – 4km for 5 to 8 year olds, cycling along the cycle path into Tralee Town Park and 8km for 9 to 14 year olds, cycling along the canal.

Both events are free and online registration is now open on the Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership website, www.kerryrecreationandsports.ie

Another element for this year’s Bike Week is the inaugural themed ‘Any Bike Will Do’ Cycle. This cycle takes place Monday, 12 June from 7.00pm to 8.00pm. The meeting point is close to O’Donnell’s on the Mounthawk/Bracker O’Regan Road. This is a relaxed flat cycle, for those 16 years and over, around the town of Tralee in the company of the Chain Gang and Na Gaeil Cycling Clubs. All one needs is a working bike and helmet.

The cycle will take in the various cycle paths around the town as well as a short spin along some of the stunning country lanes between Tralee and Blennerville. There will be a coffee/tea stop before returning to Tralee, via the newly refurbished cycle-path/walkway close to the canal. A fun and relaxed evening is guaranteed. Places are limited to 16 cyclists, so registration is essential and early registration is advised to ensure your place.

Córa Carrigg, Co-Ordinator of Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership said: ‘The Pedal in the Parks gives both young children and adults the opportunity to jointly participate in physical activity while having fun. And over the years it has been wonderful to see several generations of families taking part in what is ultimately a family fun occasion.’

All of the information for the above events – including times, suggested age ranges and registration – is available on the KRSP website, www.kerryrecreationandsports.ie.

‘These events form part of the ambition of Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership and Kerry County Council, to help get the active more active, and the less active active, as well as promoting sport, recreation against the backdrop of our beautiful county,’ said Córa Carrigg.
