Cllrs Pat McCarthy and Tom McEllistrim are set to lose their seats.

TWO current Tralee Municipal District councillors are set to lose their Council seats today.

Fine Gael Cllr Pat McCarthy and Fianna Fáil Cllr Tom McEllistrim were running in the Castleisland Local Electoral Area this time out, but tallies show both men are far behind the frontrunners Jackie Healy Rae and Charlie Farrelly.

With just four seats up for grabs, those two — tallied on 2,562 and 1,623 —  look like they will be elected, with Bobby O’Connell (1,383) also looking comfortable.

CBS The Green teacher, Fionnan Fitzgerald (1,017) is in fourth position and it looks like he and Kate McSweeney of Sinn Féin (923) will battle it out for the last seat.

Tom McEllistrim is on just 603 and Pat McCarthy on 771. McEllistrim from Ballymac polled especially poorly on his home patch, garnering just 27 votes in the two Clogher NS booths compared to 168 for party colleague and fellow Ballymac man Fionnán Fitzgerald.

Of course, it must be stated that these are just tallies, but even allowing for margins of error, the two sitting Tralee MD councillors are almost certain to lose their seats. The ballot boxes have been moved to Tralee now where the count proper will begin around 1.30pm.
