THE GERMAN composer and big band leader, James Last, has passed away at the age of 86.

James Last, played at The Rose Of Tralee festival in 1984 and was a huge hit with the crowds who came to see him and his band pack out Austin Stack Park.

The GAA link doesn’t stop there – he wrote The Sunday Game theme tune, ‘Jägerlatein’, which fully embedded his sound into the background of the Irish summer.

Over the course of a lengthy career, the versatile songwriter recorded over 200 albums selling millions of records.

In a statement, his manager said: “Mr Last passed away yesterday in Florida, peacefully and in the presence of his family.”

Back in 1984, the TV cameras were in Tralee to film James Last performances. The footage features scenery from the surrounding areas plus some very excited revellers in the crowd who were there to hear, Last’s, brass explosion.

Here’s a clip of the big day in 1984.

At 5:18 watch the crowd lose their minds to ‘Jägerlatein’, maybe you can spot someone you know among the bunch?
