MANY Tralee people will make their way out to Killorglin for Puck Fair when it gets underway on Monday.
A YouTube clip of the ancient fair has recently surfaced, that harks back to the good old days of ‘Paddywhackery’ implied by our friends in dear Britannia.
The British Movietone, Youtube channel has thrown up some gems over the past few weeks, none more so than this newsreel report of Puck Fair from sometime in the 1930’s or 40s.
It’s not King Puck, but the announcer who is the star of the show in this minute and a half clip that would have been shown in movie theatres and halls across Ireland and the UK at the time.
We get what they’re trying to get across with the video, what with the ‘saloons’ references and all that, but was there any need to mention Oliver Cromwell three or four times? That’s just rubbing it in…’so it is’.
