IT was a sad day for many in Blennerville on Friday as the bulldozers moved into St Brendan’s Blennerville old school.

They started work demolishing the 84 year old building before 9am and six hours later the school was levelled.

Many past pupils looked on as they collected their children from school and no doubt remembered the good times they had in the building.

The demolition was necessary to create a badly-needed car park for staff and to allow the construction of a looping laneway so parents can drive up to the front of the school and drop the children off.

Not all the old school will be dumped though. The plaque which adorned it, marking the date of its construction in 1932, is now at the entrance to the new school to remind all of it’s rich past.

This is shamefull destruction where are our local tds now and councillors and they going on about 1916.just to make way for a car park.

  2. Matty O'Leary says:

To be honest and with respect to Mr Foley, I disagree as I feel the old Blennerville School was not of any architectural significance – maybe a bit of local history or nostalgia at best!

The new modern school facility will do wonders for the next generation to aid them learn in a safe, warm and comfortable environment. The car park will provide safety for everyone concerned in the area when parents collect the kids from school on the so called “school run”.
Just, look at the situation with the Primary School in the Spa village and how everyone is parked all over the place, it’s a reckless and careless situation for everyone.

I prefer to send the descendants from that 1916 generation to 2016 facilities rather than outdated 1932 facilities any day. I think the children deserve it and I think the 1916 generation would agree with me as their achievements were modern, deserved and forward thinking, just like the new primary school in Blennerville.

So sad to see the old school go from 3000 miles away in Boston. -Connie Kelly
