IN just two hours on Friday afternoon, volunteers cleaning up the disused railway line between Blennerville and Tralee collected 115 bags of rubbish.

On Monday, local woman Catherine Dolan came across the rubbish, which had washed up after recent storm flooding and high tides.

She put an appeal out on the ‘Tralee Do You Know’ Facebook page for volunteers and on Friday over 20 people showed up to give her a hand. Kerry County Council supplied bags and equipment for the volunteers.

Team Bramble volunteers took part and Gillian Wharton writing on their Facebook page noted the following;

“All the items we collected with our pickers, all the items we placed in the bags had at some point made life easier and nicer for people.

The cleaning products for the house, the toiletries that make us bearable to sit beside! The empty bottles of wine, the dirty nappies, shoes, clothes, the toys, the carpets, the duvets – all these items bought and paid for to enhance our lives and then we disgard them into the environment that enhances our lives – it was like shopping on line, the railway line – only all the bottles were empty and all the toys had no child to play with them.

Nature does not want them, or indeed need them. Well done to all who came out today to help clean up our area, our place – be very proud of the work done. Remember the tide will only regurgitate what we feed it and we fed it this. Shame on us.”

Refreshments were provided by The Station House for the hardworking volunteers when the work was done. Well done to all those who took part.
