AS Monday draws to a close, it’s worth remembering that on this date 40 years ago, Kerry football was changed forever.

It was on Sunday, September 24, 1978, and Kerry were playing Dublin in the All-Ireland final. Dublin had Kerry on the ropes early on and while a John Egan goal got Kerry back into the game, Dublin were still leading the Kingdom 0-7 to 1-3.

With a few minutes to got to half-time, Paddy Cullen is adjudged to have fouled the ball, Robbie Kelleher handed the ball to Mikey Sheehy and “the greatest freak of all time” (as Micheál Ó Hehir called it) came to pass.

Dublin were shellshocked, Kerry went on to win easily and we’re still talking about the most famous goal in GAA history all these years later…
