THREE TY students from Mercy Mounthawk have made a documentary about Cumann Iosaef Community Centre outlining the importance of its work to the local community,
Daniel Sheehy, Felix Walker and Hannah Shalvey were prompted to make the film, ‘A Threshold Of Decency’, after a suggestion from their English teacher. The documentary received its premiere at Clogharesta , Hawley Park, on Wednesday night, attended by local residents and Mayor of Tralee, Norma Foley.
“It started off as a TY project and it was supposed to be a five minute documentary so we approached James Hussey and Kevin O’Connor from Cumann Iosaef about doing it,” said Hannah.

“But it grew into something bigger. It’s really important that we raise awareness on what Cumann Iosaef does for the community in Tralee, because not many people know about it. They should be allowed continue what they do without worrying about funding, because it’s such an exceptional cause,” she said.
Earlier this month, Kevin O’Connor of Cumann Iosaef gave a presentation at the meeting of Tralee Municipal District asking them to support them in their quest for extra funding to make up for the increase in the minimum wage.
“It’s a breath of fresh air, that young people take notice of their senior citizens and the world around them” said Kevin. “The research they did is enormous, they spent weeks and weeks on it. They interviewed people and learnt firsthand how people are surviving, so we’re looking at a bright future when young people take an interest in their fellow citizens.”
