CBS Primary School, Tralee took great pleasure in raising their well deserved Active School Flag this week.

The flag was awarded earlier in the year, to acknowledge the work undertaken by the school in reviewing, planning and promoting physical activity.

The Active School Project is a Dept of Education initiative and it is up to schools to put themselves forward for examination. The dynamic and hardworking staff in CBS were happy to take on the challenge.

A number of projects were focussed on in the school in order to achieve the flag. A fundamental movement programme for children in 1st class took place for six weeks.

Lunchtime basketball leagues ran for girls in 5th & 6th class. The school hosted a very successful Basketball Blitz with over 10 local schools participating.

On wet days, children stayed active by dancing in the classroom when unable to play on yard.

Children were reminded of the importance of healthy eating, hydration and taking rest breaks and introduced to outside activities such as Tae Kwon Do, Irish Dancing and Tag Rugby.

In addition we hosted a hugely successful Active School Week in April, which included a ‘Run for your Life’ activity, totting up 65Km, a ‘Drop Everything And Dance’ and a parent’s walk.

A well-deserved Active Flag indeed.
