Wettest October Day In 77 Years Recorded In Valentia Last Month

WHILE the rest of the country reported rainfall way below the average for October, Valentia bucked the trend last month according to Met Eireann’s latest figures.

Thanks to the dreadful days we experienced on October 3-4, the south Kerry station reported slightly above average rainfall. October 3rd was the wettest day for that month in 77 years and the wettest day overall since 1980.

Valentia Observatory had 105% of LTA (monthly total of 186.4 mm). Over three quarters of Valentia’s monthly rainfall total was attributed to the heavy rain which fell in the Southwest on October 3-4, where the station recorded over 150 mm.

The month’s highest daily rainfall total of 105.5 mm was recorded here on the 3rd, its wettest October day in 77 years, and its wettest day (for any month) since 1980. Just up the road at Shannon Airport,  they had their driest October in 51 years with monthly rainfall total of 34.7 mm (34% of LTA).
